Persistence
The boy’s hand shook as he lit the candles surrounding him. As he read from the book he tried to project an air of confidence in his voice although a small tremble betrayed him. He was mostly successful in his attempts to suppress his whimper as he pierced his palm with the scalpel he’d pocketed from Biology class and let a few drops of blood fall on the symbols he’d carved into the floorboards of his bedroom. After a few seconds, the room began to fill with a yellowish smoke and the boy pulled his jumper up over his nose and mouth in a futile attempt not to inhale the stench of rotten eggs. Soon a booming voice pierced his ears and a gargantuan shape began to form in the mist.

Cat-thulu Times Two!
Full disclosure, I'm not actually a big fan of dressing up your pets. I think hats/things on their head are alright but when you're putting full outfits on, particularly over their paws it's unnatural for them and stressful for everyone involved. The furthest I've gone before is when we used to have antlers for our old dog at Christmas and she used to pose and wait for everyone to say 'aw' then reach up and knock them off, it was very cute! Since we got our cats, Molly & Tilly, I have only attempted to dress them up once. A few years ago, I bought them Halloween capes. I knew I wouldn't get them done up, and didn't really want to, but hoped I'd at least get a cute photo of them draped on their backs. Sadly it was not to be, as soon as the fabric touched them they freaked out and ran and I didn't push the issue. They really hate any kind of dressing up as even collars cause a meltdown. When we got them, they came with harnesses and leads to walk them like dogs but how their previous owner managed it I'll never know as when we tried they got down on their bellies and refused to move before twisting themselves until at least their arms were free of the harnesses.

Mayhem Film Festival 2021 Review
It's the most wonderful time of the year! No, I don't mean Christmas I mean Mayhem Film Festival. After a scaled back 'skeleton' edition in 2020, this year was back to normal, except for a few minor COVID-related changes, with 15 feature films plus their signature shorts showcase over four days. Taking place at the stunning Broadway cinema in Nottingham, Mayhem has been running since 2005. Initially starting with shorts, they soon expanded to include features too with a focus on horror, sci-fi and cult. I have attended the festival in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, & 2019 so you can see why I was so excited to be back! This year we had several films directed by duos as well as zombies, and demons, and magic, oh my!

Halloween Party Playlist 2021
You've invited all your guests. You've decorated your house (if you're American then hopefully that involves one of those crazy 12 foot skeletons because I'm very jealous of those). You've picked out your best costume and spent hours following SFX tutorials on YouTube to get the perfect scary look. Now you just need to set the right atmosphere, and I'm here to provide you with the perfect playlist to do just that. Here it is, and I'll defend my choices below:

How Avengers: Endgame Changed My Life
Picture the scene if you will: it's 2019, you love movies and you've dutifully watched (almost) every installment of the MCU for the past eleven years. You've booked a double bill screening to see Infinity War and Endgame back-to-back, Endgame starting at one minute past midnight so you can be one of the first audiences in the world to see it. The cinema is busier than it often is at social hours of the day, lots of people are dressed up, and you can feel the excitement buzzing in the air. The film lives up to the hype, everybody gasps and laughs together, and you leave with a bubble of happiness around your little soul. It's still intact as you get into work the next morning. Yes you're a bit tired but you're on time and you do your damn job like you always do. One of your colleagues asks you how the film was and your boss overhears and accuses you, in front of your colleague and potentially customers, of being unprofessional. The bubble of happiness is well and truly disintegrated. You hold it together, hearing them talking about you to your colleague while they think you're out of earshot, until lunch when you cry in a public place, call your Mum, and then promptly hand in your four weeks notice when you get back.
