The Gates in Central Park

A beautiful exhibit that once stood

sometime ago in Central Park. There was an incredible art exhibit called the gates by Cristo and Jean Claude. I don’t know the meaning of the art piece, but all I know is that it was beautiful and as enjoyer of art such as myself, it’s hard to explain, but easy to enjoy, which is like a cliché that a lot of art lovers use when they don’t know how to explain why they like the art or quite get the meaning of the art piece and that it’s me but still I found it very beautiful and intriguing.

The gates were an all over Central Park exhibit, so anybody that was in Central Park during the time of the gates, got to enjoy the beautiful piece. It was like an interactive piece, which is what I think they were going for. As you can see in the pictures provided in this article that it was a beautiful piece of doorways with orange curtain draped door. It called the gates. Just a beautiful piece that lasted a good while in all the roads in the path of Central Park. The gates were lined up. I feel very fortunate to have known about this beautiful interactive piece.

I do not know the meaning of the gates by Cristo and Jean-Claude but it’s a piece that I find unforgettable. However, the gates had been met with mixed reactions. Some people loved it. Others did not love it at all. The choice of the curtains color was saffron, which was supposed to be a peaceful feeling as people walk through them to you know leave them with a peaceful and warm feeling. I guess in writing this article there wasn’t a deeper meaning than walking through flowing curtains that just the simple image of a flowing curtain, which is artistic and itself. That is what it’s called the gates.

The gates did add a artistic accent to Central Park that it had never ever had before, until the gates had been set up.

However, the gates did overstay its welcome. There were some that were opposed to it, because it had started to become out distraction for inhabitants of central Park. And there was such a thing as too much of a good thing and unfortunately the gates did become too much of a good thing . In the time that it was supposed to be there, though exhibit was simply beautiful, with beautiful, saffron, flowing curtains on a orange frame. Then afterwards overstay, it’s welcome. The curtains began to fall off, and it had to come down. I know someone that worked at Central Park during the time this exhibit was around and we had discussed it and I told her that I thought it was one of the most beautiful ideas at Central Park. Had to have this installation put in for the time that it was there.

The gates had been an exhibit that had been done all over the world by Crystal and Jean Claude since I think it was 1975 or 1979 and the year of the installation being put in central Park was 2005. Crystal and Jean Claude are not in artistic team. In fact, they are two separate hours we have had successes on their own. They simply collaborate on the gates. I think at least a little piece of the gates should’ve been saved and put into one of New York’s finest museums like the museum of art the Metropolitan, Museum of Art, or something to that affect. The gates certainly was, and is a beautiful piece of art.
