The Three Minutes You Couldn't Wait For
He lies in bed, mouth open, letting out his first cry. The breast arrives within a minute. Maybe less. Infants don't have clocks. They only record one cause and effect: I cry, the world comes. After this sequence repeats itself hundreds, thousands of times, it engraves itself into the deepest layer of the nervous system, becoming a conviction more unshakable than any memory — my will is the remote control of the world.

The Unpicked Pear
Before she stumbled into me, my eyes had been stuck on her neck. The petal had gotten there when we were picking prickly pears, halfway up the cliff. It was pinkish-white, edges slightly wilted, plastered motionless to a streak of sweat on the side of her neck. She hadn't noticed. I'd seen it when I looked up at the bush: the whole thing was green knots, flowers still clinging, not a single yellow one. I told her they weren't ready, sour and astringent, needed another month. She said, "You said they were edible. If you won't go, I will." I said, "Are you stupid? The flowers haven't even all fallen off." She said, "Push me from behind. I don't believe there isn't a single ripe one."

I entered the Folio Society’s annual illustration contest for the third year running in May. They announced their short list of 20 entries on July 16th and once again my entry did not make the cut. Naturally I’m disappointed. I spent literally hundreds of hours preparing initial workups, playing with a wide variety of visual strategies, and creating the final illustration.

The Pencil I Refuse to Throw Away
I stood in the hallway of the architecture department for ten minutes, holding a spent technical pen in my hand. 0.3 mm, the ink dried, the tip clogged. I had tried burning it with a lighter, but it was beyond saving. The fluorescent lights in the hallway cast a harsh white, making the tracing paper on the drafting tables take on a bluish grey. It was the second semester of my freshman year; I had been auditing architecture courses for over a month. I had learned a phrase (“graphic presentation”) and another: “self-doubt.”

Not Art
My father was an artist, I am not. This has long been my understanding. Though my father lived and died unknown to the wider world of art, he was a capable water colourist, as well as working with other media. He was skilled at painting and drawing. I never inherited any of this skill with the paintbrush or the pencil, although I was a keen amateur photographer many years ago and still like to take photographs. These days, however, I only use my ancient iPhone, which has its limitations.
