The tech industry makes the social media world go 'round; explore the technologies that keep us all connected.

Social media is a great way to connect with people from around the world. It can be a great platform for people to start businesses and earn money. But it has a dark side. A side that takes us away from reality. It can recreate a person's life. Carefully chosen photos, videos, and posts give us a glimpse into the parts of a person's life they want us to see.

Social Media. It almost rules our world now, right? People connect on social media, learn to cook on social media, shop on social media, and can find out that cute barista whose name tag you only saw the first three letters of on social media.

Technology. It is a blessing and a curse. It is used to connect us or divide us. It permeates almost every area of our lives and most of us check our phones more than we drink water. It is a habit, hobby, and, for most, a necessity. So why would someone give it up?It started for me during the 2016 election. I, like most Americans, was glued to the news watching the craziest moments I've ever seen unfold in American politics. Everyone had an opinion. They still do. Which is great—that's what America is about right? Freedom of speech and expression. However, I was seeing my social media feeds flooded with angry, hateful, impassioned, closed-minded people (on both sides of the aisle) arguing over "Cheeto Man" and "Crooked Hillary." A lot of ALL CAPS arguments were happening in the comments section of almost every post I saw—people, who had grown up as best friends and even family members, were now at war. I found myself constantly feeling stressed whenever I would log on to any of my social media accounts, never knowing what I was going to see or who would be hating whom today.I couldn't breathe. After the election, I realized that I needed to do something for my sanity. I had started to see people I care about in a different light, all because of different opinions that weren't being shared with me, they were being screamed AT me. I came to the obvious conclusion that no one will ever change someone's opinion or belief in the comment section of Instagram or Facebook, and Twitter isn't fun anymore when your @s are full of people calling you names. Social media was created and designed to connect people and to make the world feel a little less scary and big. That's what it used to be for me. When I was in high school, Myspace was the coolest thing ever and the only stress I faced was who was going to be in my top eight (and what position they would be in—those decisions could make or break a friendship, am I right? :) ) and Facebook was the cool new kid on the block. I used to talk to friends and share the cool things going on in my life—it was interactive.

Many agree that social media is poison. There are better things a person can be doing than wasting hours on Facebook absorbing the idiocy, drama, and pseudo-social justice wars. There’s harassment, stalking, oh yes, and those wonderful memory reminders that show you things you may have wanted to forget (such as “I’m so excited I’m going back to school!” when you had to drop out for medical reasons and now five years later owe $3K for an education you were never able to get).

Generation Z would find it hard to believe that a phonograph device, and a gramophone were used to play music by previous generations. Today, they can use smartphones, tap an application, or give voice commands and enjoy their favorite song instantly. Today, it's tough to imagine life without Facebook or Twitter. While the older generation is slowly catching up with the latest social media apps like Snapchat and Instagram, they at least had a taste of social networking before. Let's know something more about the sites which were launched for social networking, but failed to keep up with the time.

What Makes Something Go Viral?
To first understand what makes something go viral, you must ask yourself what makes something shareable? The concept is not terribly complex, but one that takes time to incorporate into your content, in a way that will work best for your creating.

In The Power of Identity, Manuel Castells refers often to the “network society.” He defines it in the preface of the book when he refers to the “network society” as “a new global structure.” He calls it “a new institutional form” and “the techno-economic transformation of society” (Castells xxxvii-xxxviii). What Castells is getting at here is the globalization of society.

Chances are if you are reading this, you have a slight interest in deleting your account too. Instagram commenced by the innocent idea of having your gallery in which you could showcase precious moments, edit photos, and share with friends. Instagram was meant to be a community app for photography and now has turned into a "lifestyle" app. Today, Instagram is everything it wasn’t expected to be, another successfully damaged experiment. It has become a mass market social media app that twists reality. People have created personas to those they are, to live a life that is only unauthentic. Filters, literally mask fact. Likes, determine value and popularity. Comments are usually posted in hopes of getting one back.
virtual SpecPublished 6 years ago in 01Why Facebook Hates (Some) Viral Videos
I recently heard one of my new favorite YouTubers, Drew Gooden, talking about a video his girlfriend tried to post on Facebook. She did post it, and it was quickly taken down, not by her, but by Facebook because the video had copyrighted music on it. The video showed her and her boyfriend on a racket ball court making ridiculously bad hits with aggressive rap playing in the background. The video wasn't making any money; it was just for their friends' amusement. Drew points out that, while his girlfriend's video got taken down, other accounts, monetized accounts, with millions of followers, put copyrighted music on their videos, and they don't get taken down.
Alexander EnderPublished 6 years ago in 01Why Social Media Within Our Future Generations Will Doom Us All
In a world filled with iPhones, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook, we no longer have to call the house phone of our friends and have that awkward conversation with the parents, nor do we have to email or write to each other. I can ask my friend how their day was in a two second time period. Yes, it’s amazing, and yes, it just saves so much more time...but we’re now in 2018 and I feel that social constructs really depict our lives. I’m a 20-year-old musical theatre student and even my course tutors let us know what room we’re in for the day via a private Facebook group.
