social media
The tech industry makes the social media world go 'round; explore the technologies that keep us all connected.
The Influence of Facebook
The world has become a place of such conflict and controversy throughout politics and technology recently, producing a fear of what will come of it all in the future. Could it be painstakingly detrimental to our kind? What makes us human—our free will, individual traits, personality characteristics, behaviors, and how we communicate or interact with one another—all of these things are being collected as data by social media giant Facebook. The data is then used to offer ad space to companies for marketing purposes for a fee.

I’ve debated talking about this for a long time and haven’t known how exactly to come forward and tell my story in a light that can be understood and respected. I can’t possibly be the only person to have experienced something like this and I most certainly won’t be the last. So, if my voice can help one person who has the misfortune of going through something like this, then I will consider my efforts to have been a success.

It's only been five minutes that I put my phone down and stopped scrolling through Instagram. 30 seconds later... ... Oh look, Alex posted a picture of him on vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Lucky. I wish I could afford to go on vacation. How are people so fortunate to travel for a living and get paid for it? I want to do that. I want to visit other countries and experience their culture and delicious food.
Jasmane DaneshmandPublished 5 years ago in 01Tumblr's Trouble: An Opinion
By now, everyone has heard about Tumblr's decision to eliminate all things adult-oriented by the 17th. The website claims that non-erotic nude art is safe, but Instagram user (and painter) Dan Lacey (aka danlaceythepainterofpancakes) can tell you firsthand that this exception is a lie. The cut-off date is also a lie, as there have been several sex workers and non-sex work creators/users who've been flagged and/or have had things removed from their blogs the moment that the first decree was released. Not to mention, they're marked as NSFW whether they want to be or not. Repeat offenders are set to be removed completely. Meanwhile, the porn bots that have plagued Tumblr for a while are still out to play. (I get followed by at least three to four a day.)

If you still haven’t deleted your Facebook account yet, then you probably know that it’s kind of a big deal to be present on social media. Although sometimes social media can feel like antisocial, it all depends on how effective you are with your social interactions.

Jeff NevilPublished 6 years ago in 01Reddit Explained
The death of StumbleUpon was a difficult dilemma for me. I received most of my reads from this site, so what to do, what to do? I turned to my nemesis, Reddit. I don't say this lightly - Reddit can be a bear. Readers complain about everything from your grammar to your content, even when you are posting an article written by someone else. I submitted an article on some ancient bones discovered in Israel, and they literally lowered a boom on my head because the title of the article claimed those bones would rewrite the timeline of evolution. My bad. Over time, I have become a Reddit whiz kid, and I would like to share my insights in the hope that you will become Reddit submitters. There is currently no better place to submitt your endeavors. I have tried all forms of social media from Flipboard to Twitter, and nothing comes close to the killing you can make on Reddit. I write narratives mostly in the sciences, so my audience is small. One post to Reddit got me 800 reads in one day.

This week I have removed all forms of social media from my phone; Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat, and I wanted to voice my findings. I have recently returned from Australia and have found myself suffering from forms of anxiety, feeling low or lack of self worth; feelings I have felt prior to Australia but have significantly increased since returning to the UK.
Connected
Loading... loading... loading... start. Eerie silence flushed through the Earth like a deadly parasite awaiting to attach to its host, to connect. Little did everyone know just how "connected" they truly were. Full name, email, phone number, password, five things you need to fill up to join in and only five things They need to know from where you are, what you are doing, who you are with at all times to control you. A world brightened by cell phone screens, controlled by computer software without anyone ever realizing it.
Lindsay JohnsonPublished 6 years ago in 01Is Social Media Disconnecting More Than It Is Connecting People?
Digital natives, those born into the Digital Age, are surrounded by social networks. Instead of meeting up for a get together at a certain time and place, social media has flipped this on its head—now it’s all the time and everywhere! I’d like to ask how this is affecting the way we interact with and care for each other, the way we think of and care for ourselves and even to the extent of what we do and who we are becoming with our added virtual persona. A case could be made that social media is disconnecting people more than it is connecting them. It could be argued that the diversity of human relationships and communication cannot be substituted for the people we choose to connect with from behind a screen. The growing market of social media applications is beginning to redefine human connection. Are we escaping the complexities of reality to enjoy a seemingly simpler ‘virtuality’? Are we shortchanging ourselves?
