I asked three friends to read all of the birthday poem submissions and make the selections so I wouldn't be the one choosing. After reading everything, they couldn't agree on a single favorite. Instead, they chose these three poems to be read as part of the celebration.

I'm out.
If Vocal is really not going to pay anyone unless they have a subscription, I'm out. I haven't reached the cash out limit yet and I've been on here's for at least three years. I know I need to do better at posting and promoting my own work, but if I have to pay to earn I'll just prioritize Medium . I'm already paying $5 a month for their subscription.

The Vocal Situation
Introduction Thankfully I can now publish and there are some improvement in the editor although I hate the autosave feature. When it fails and says it is saved locally you don;t know whether to trust it. As yet it has worked for me, but I do save an offline copy just in case.

The Grammarly Conspiracy
Introduction When I first felt I could actually write on Vocal, I got advice from Call Me Les and Tom Bradbury to use something like Grammarly to help my grammar and spelling, because my writing is not that good. I stumbled about and wasn't sure at first, but eventually started to use it in earnest.

Why I Fail as a Vocal Writer
I joined Vocal in January 2022. To date, I have 33 Top Stories. I have also placed Honorable Mention in one contest and Runner-Up (before the current prize structure) in four. I have even received $75.98 from 24 tips, most of which have been from unofficial challenges. So, one might think that I am a fair success on Vocal. However, one metric proves that that is not the case: my overall reads.
