What's Happening on Vocal
What I Get/What I Want

I receive about five emails a month from [email protected], most with alerts of expiring Challenges, some with Top Stories and links to people to which I subscribe, a few have platform updates.
Let me restate that last bit: not just a 'dew' or a 'very few': within the past twelve months I've received exactly TWO platform updates. I know because I am a Gen Jones/Boomer and I carefully save my emails from Vocal in case I need them. As one save the boxes from Apple because they feel good and are a 'very nice box'. Now that I have found a need to consult how many emails I receive from Vocal I will, likely, never delete them at all.
On July 7 I received an email titled A New Vocal: A Rebuilt Editor, Verified Publishing, and a More Human Platform. It contained a link to Justin's post of the same title.
The email had a few bullet points: Editor, Verifying, and the news that earned would now be only for Vocal+ members.
The content from Justin went into more detail, adding that now connecting to Stripe is required to publish on the platform, and again with the news of earnings for only Vocal+ members towards the end of the piece.
This is the first non-story related email I've received from Vocal for... a long time.
(I checked- the last time was twice on October 21 2025, when access was blocked due to the AWS Great Outage. Before that it was October 2, 2024 when the ability to Edit, Revert to Draft, and Delete was granted to Vocal+ members. Given that we are now working through the IN-ability to edit, perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned this...)
The next day, July 8, I received an email titled Update to our terms and policies . (Yes, most of the title was in lowercase, and yes that left me unsettled after years of capitalized words in the email title and Vocal post subtitles...). A link to the usual Policy tab on the Resources section of Vocal was included.
Although the seven resources on this tab each look between 4 and 7 years old, all of them except the AI Policy were updated in July 2026. If you haven't read these policies before, or even if it's been a while since you first read them, take a few minutes to read them now. Note that Comments have been disabled for the updated Policy pieces.
So, Judey; what do you want?
I'll tell you what I want, what I really really want: targeted communication to Vocal creator/writers.
This is NOT new.
Five years ago, the eleventh thing I posted on Vocal was about communicating to Vocal writers when things aren't working correctly.
Five years ago, BEFORE leaving Comments on Articles as a Thing, all of the stats stopped updating. No number of Hearts given. No number of Reads showing, no increase in Earnings.
Back then we had Facebook groups as the means to communicate, writer-to-writer. Trust me: those screens blew UP. What is happening? Will we still need to pay for this month? Should I even try to post? (Also- back then posts could take days, a week was normal, even longer during a Challenge.)
So I wrote about how a group/company should prepare to distribute information when a Situation Develops. (It's a good piece; 4 steps, it's solid)
At the end of the piece I gently shared that Vocal had an opportunity to do this in their current situation. (I was, perhaps, a kinder and more gentle folk when I was in my 50's?)
Now, though? Now two emails the day of and the day after a rest is not enough. It is, indeed, a start, but it isn't enough.
I certainly did not expect a rest to be obstacle-free. That is not how platform remakes happen. There are bumps and outages. Things happen. Stuff breaks. Connections don't, well, always connect.
I get it. We get it.
