Where Birds Made Of Sheet Can Try How To Fly
Short story for '50 words' unofficial vocal challenge created and set by Judey Kalchik
https://vocal.media/writers/will-you-accept-the-challenge
When I first saw this challenge from the list that the awesome Mike Singleton has curated:
https://vocal.media/writers/unofficial-vocal-challenges-august-2026
I smugly thought, 'This will be OK. I have experimented with flash fiction and previously put a post on here with my story Gone Fishing':
https://vocal.media/fiction/gone-fishing-18cr08b9
Then I read the criteria!
Judey has set clear constraints, including:
Vocabulary pool of only 50 words
49 of the words must be only 1 syllable long
1 word must be the three-syllable word 'anywhere'
Piece must be at least 200 words long
Piece must be a coherent 'thing', not a list of words
Post it in the Writers Community; one tag should be 'Vocal'
If Vocal isn't an option- heaven help me after I've written this; should that be the case- then choose any tag and leave a comment mocking my rules. I can take it. Probably. Please post a link to your published piece in the comments so that all may read and marvel at your cleverness.
I somehow don't think anyone will be marvelling at my cleverness, but here is my wee piece:
Where Birds Made of Sheet Can Try How to Fly
The clock ticks back in a room made of glass, where birds made of sheet can try how to fly. My flesh peels like wax as the gears start to spin. Sharp wings split my skin, and the bones snap out flat. I scream through the dark but can not hide anywhere.
I have also rewritten Gone Fishing to fit this challenge; I much prefer it:
Black Foam
The fish was big, more great than all he had met past. Its skin shook with bright gold plates. But smoke from tall stacks hid its gleam. No light could pass through to make them shine now. The black foam rose to gulp him down and left no trace anywhere.
