Will You Accept the Challenge?

Green Eggs and Ham exists because Dr. Seuss took a fifty dollar bet that he could not write a whole book using fifty words or fewer.

He won.

The entire story runs on exactly fifty different words, and every one is a single syllable except the word anywhere.

One of the best loved children's books ever was built from a vocabulary you could fit on a napkin, all to settle a bet.

This isn't a myth; it's a verified truth. Dr Seuss wrote the book and won the bet- although it is said the publisher welched on it. (welched may be a pejorative term and does not appear in Green Eggs and Ham)

This is an Unofficial Challenge, written now by me because I am avoiding completing two Official Vocal Challenge entries and one personal, excuse me: 'lived experience' piece. So, really, you benefit from my struggles. I feel happy about that, and faintly noble. Trust me: I need the W.

Can you create a Vocal piece using the same 49 words of only one syllable, with a 50th word is 'anywhere'?

  • Words may be repeated as needed through out.

  • The entry (look at me, describing this with official-sounding words and stuff) must be at least 200 words long, not including the title and subtitle, or any explanation you want to add to the piece as an afterwards or whatever. (I have been around a while, and anyway- that's my trick to hit the word count...)

  • The story must have some coherence, aka 'not a list of words'

  • The title and subtitle required by Vocal also must follow the same rules and contain only words from your 50 word pool.

  • There is no 'due date', but TBH our attention span is pretty slim, isn't it? You would most likely get the best traction on this if you completed it by August 1, 2026 but you do you, Boo.

  • Please post it in the Writers community, which has a lower threshold of required words to post. Tag it as Vocal plus whatever you think might apply. (I believe you can also tag it as a 'Prompt', but since I can't check the tags available whole writing something, and the Communities don't show the available tags on their home pages... which by the way would be a pretty great idea, don't you think Justin@Vocal?) I am only trying to recollect correctly and maybe that isn't there even though I'm pretty sure it is.

That's it! The entire Non-Official Challenge.

  • Vocabulary pool of only 50 words

  • 49 of the words must be only 1 syllable long

  • 1 word must be the three-syllable word 'anywhere'

  • Piece must be at least 200 words long

  • Piece must be a coherent 'thing', not a list of words

  • Post it in the Writers Community, one tag should be 'Vocal'
If Vocal isn't an option- heaven help me after I've written this should that be the case- then chose any tag and leave a comment mocking my rules. I can take it. Probably.

  • Please post a link to your published piece in the comments so that all may read and marvel at your cleverness.

  • Do you agree that a list of the tags available within a Community should be shown on the home page of the Community?

Let the shenanigans begin!
