For the month of August, I am hosting an Unofficial Writing Challenge.

The Challenge is to write a Short Story based on the following theme:

โ€œThey say that if you die in your dream, you will die for realโ€

Urban Legend

You are not limited to the genre of Horror for this Unofficial Challenge. Feel free to adventure outside of the box, if you wish.

Some ideas may include:

  • Someone who has died a thousand times in their dreams . . . but this night is different!

  • A psychological thriller about a Sleep Study gone wrong

  • A Science Fiction story about a protagonist who dies in a dream only to awaken in an alternate reality

  • A twist where the Dream World is reality, and what was believed to be reality is in fact the dream

  • Two alternate realities where your fate is tied to the fate of your dream-world doppelgรคnger

  • You die in a dream within a dream, and the worlds become intertwined

  • You die in a dream but awaken . . . only to discover later that you are still in the dream

  • You awaken from a nightmare, but throughout the next day, you notice small details in your world are wrong

  • An adolescent-themed story dealing with a fear of the unknown

  • A sleep journal where the protagonist slowly goes mad, dream by dream

Of course, you are not limited to these ideas. Feel free to use them or to come up with something entirely different.

The Rules:

  • The Challenge is open for the month of August. Entries must be submitted by August 31 at the Witching Hour of Midnight.

  • Submit your Entry by posting a LINK in the Comment Section below

  • One Submission per person. You can write more, but only one will be considered for the prizes, so designate which is your Official Entry if you write multiple stories

  • Your Entry may be a Short Story, a Poem, or whatever other format you can dream up, but the maximum word limit is 2,500 words. There is no minimum Word Count

  • Your Submission does not need to be in the Horror genre. Be as creative as you wish with the theme. Whether you come up with a Horror Spine-Chiller, a Sci-Fi Suspense, a Crime Thriller, Psychological Fiction, entries from a Dream Diary, or anything else is entirely up to you.

  • Prizes: $15 for First Place; $10 for Second Place; and $5 for Third Place, given as Tips. I will act as the Judge, Jury and Executioner . . . er, really only the Judge!
