Are you racking your brains, but can’t think of any ideas?

Writing is often a lonely profession where you sit in front of a screen or a piece of paper for hours, doing your best to produce quality content. Sometimes your brain may go blank and you’ll be asking yourself one of the most difficult questions: “What should I write?”

It’s very common among writers and may be caused by writer’s block, or simple lack of ideas and inspiration. Below are my tips on how to deal with it, find inspiration and never run out of ideas.

If you experience writer’s block or lack of ideas, make sure:

  • You’re rested. Be sure that you get enough sleep and don’t feel stressed
  • Take a break. If you’re writing everyday and feel burned out, stop. Try not to write for one day. It’s ok to relax, exercise, go out for a walk, talk to friends, etc. It may be refreshing.
  • Read and research. Reading provides you with information and can give you inspiration

You need a plan

Personally, I don’t enjoy writing about topics I’m not interested in and studying dozens of essays filled with technical jargon makes me tired. While writing about things I’m passionate about, or sharing my experiences comes with ease.

That’s why before deciding what to write about I recommend you to:

  • Write down all the things you’re genuinely passionate about/good at. It will come naturally for you to create content about something you love, know about and makes you feel inspired and motivated, e.g. your hobbies, skills, talents.
  • List your personal experiences and random ideas. Such as your life lessons, travel stories, thoughts, jokes, feelings, movies you saw.
  • Look for ideas on the Internet by reading news, blog posts, researching keywords. It will broaden your horizons and give you inspiration.
  • Go out of your comfort zone. Learn something new, start a new hobby, grow as a person, etc. New ideas will come flooding in.

List article ideas

Based on your passions, experiences and other things you listed earlier, create a more detailed list.

Let’s say, for example, that you like playing games. It’s a very broad topic. You can try to niche it down and come up with many story ideas related to it, from “How I Met My Wife in Overwatch”, “Top 10 Nintendo Switch Games” to “5 Best MMORPGs To Play In November 2023.”

To help you discover more ideas, you can use ChatGPT. Ask it to generate article ideas for you. However, make sure to not depend on AI tools too much, they may provide wrong information. Always check the correctness.

You can get dozens of ideas at a time this way.

Never run out of ideas

Unless you write a diary about your everyday experiences, it would be a good idea to create a schedule or simply pick one or more ideas each day to write an article about.

Having a strict schedule, though, could have negative impact on your motivation, that’s why I encourage you to pick a topic from the list, that you will enjoy writing about.

I get a feeling that if you enjoy writing something, readers will enjoy reading it.

Conclusion

Having a list of ideas is beneficial; it can be your backup plan in case you don’t know what to write about, preventing you from running out of ideas. Just make sure to add new topics from time to time.

Be hungry for knowledge and constantly keep learning.

May the inspiration be with you, always!
