Professor Tran Quoc Vuong said that the ancient and primitive "Banh Chung" was round like "Banh Tet" or "Banh Tay" and "Banh Tet" was born in the process of Vietnamese-Cham cultural exchange. Vietnamese people create the "Banh Tet" from the visualization of the Linga element from the Cham’s The God Shiva (Mahadeva).

There is another legend that in the spring of 1789, Nguyen Hue marched to the North to fight the Qing army. At that time, the soldiers were rested and ate Tet. Among the soldiers, there was a soldier who was sent by his wife for a cake made from glutinous rice, filled with mung beans, shaped like today's "Banh Tet". The soldier brought a cake to invite King Quang Trung. The king saw that it was delicious, so he asked about this cake. The soldier said that the cake was made by his wife in his hometown. Every time he eats cake, the more he loves him, the more he misses his wife. He had abdominal pain, but when he ate this cake, he didn't feel pain anymore. Hearing the soldier's touching story, the king ordered everyone to wrap this cake to eat Tet and named it "Banh Têt". For a long time, the name of the cake changed to "Banh Tet".

"Banh Tet" has a long cylindrical shape, so it is also known as a cake bang, the two blows usually have a common cake handle made of banana leaf veins to form a pair. People also make cakes without meat fillings so that they can last longer or vegetarian with fillings that can be ripe bananas. The cake is considered a skillful package when the cake is evenly rounded, tied tightly, the filling is in the middle, there are artisans and the filling is wrapped in a triangle shape when cut out.

"Banh Tet" are usually stored for a few days, cooked on New Year's Eve so that on New Year's Eve they can be eaten with pickles and braised meat. This is usually a "Banh Tet" filled with meat, fat and green beans, and is eaten by many people. In addition, there is also a sweet "Banh Tet" with banana or mung bean filling, a large one for many people or a small one for one person.

There are many types of "Banh Tet": cakes, savory cakes, vegetarian cakes,... The main ingredient of "Banh Tet" is glutinous rice accompanied by pork, mung beans and other spices. Salted palanquin is an indispensable dish for the people of the South and Central regions. Compared to melons, palanquins take a long time to salt before they can be eaten.
