From Rodeos to Railways

Wyoming is a state that is looked over a lot when planning vacations for the family. It is a place that is rich with history. The railway, the rodeos, and the river runs make it a memorable experience for people who do take a trip to this Majestic state. The capitol of Wyoming is Cheyenne and to me this is where most of the action is. Another part of the state that I love is Jackson Hole and the entrance to Yellow Stone National Park.

One of the biggest events that puts Cheyenne on the map is Frontier Days. This event started in 1897 when the city asked all the ranches around to send them their best cowboys. They would have competitions in bull riding, horse racing, and steer wrestling. Two years later women joined in the competition with barrel racing. Today Frontier Days is a three day party filled with thrills and parties. People come from all over to enter into the competitions or watch the event.

Bronco Riding

If you miss the rodeo you can always visit the historical Museum that shows the events from years past.

The Museum has fun for the whole family. There is memorials inside from the riders that participated in the early years, but also movies you can watch that capture the events. For the younger children there is a room where they can dress up and play rodeo. Parents can get pictures of the fun.

The museum also houses one of the largest collections of buggies from the yearly life in Cheyenne.

The Streets of Cheyenne

From March to November families can catch a trolley. This trolley takes visitors around the city and tells them the history of the different buildings. You can hop on and off of the trolley at the museums. At the beginning and end of the trolley ride you will see this building. It is the old train station. Inside the station you can visit the museum that tells about the different locomotive engines. There area also some parks that host some of the retired engines.

In one of the areas at the museum there is a replica of Wyoming and the train line. Children can also play with the electric engines and watch them go around the little villages.

Capitol Building

On the trolley tour you are also taken to the Capitol Building. It is amazing to see the different construction that each building has.

When it is freezing out side in the winter you can head indoors and see the beautiful Botanic Gardens that Cheyenne has. This is also one of the stops you can jump off on from the trolley.

The Botanical Gardens building is really quite unique. There is an area that kids can go and see fairy gardens. The same area walking a little further you can see water features with fish and turtles. The plants give it a tropical feel and there area benches you can sit on and meditate in nature even when it is minus 10 out side. In the summer you can go up to the roof and sit outside for a picnic. The roof is a great place to get an over view of the museum across the way as well as the Rodeo Grounds. There is a beautiful lake that also boarders the garden and trails are created to show different plants and statues.

Next to the Gardens there is a really fun place for children. The Children's Village is a place where the kids can go and run around. Do activities that teach them about our world and conservation. There is water for them to play with as well as sand. They have a puppet theater they kids can go in and write their own puppet plays. It is really a fun area for all kids to enjoy, even kids at heart.

Terry Bison Ranch

The last place I am going to talk ab0ut is the Terry Bison Ranch. This is a ranch that has so many different things you can do. They have animals to see, horses to ride, and Bison to feed.

If you want to go feed the Bison you get to also ride on a train that they have created just to take people to feed the Bison. They have buckets of pellets on the train that you put in your hand and the Bison comes up to the door or window and eats right from your hand. It is an amazing experience.

There is also one of the best restaurants that I have been. It is a mix between formal and country. The food includes some of the meat of the Bison.

My son road his first horse at the ranch. It is amazing to see his face and how excited he was to connect to the animals.

The ranch also has cabins people can rent for the night to months. Where the cabins are located they have a playground for children. It is a place that has everything you need to have days of excitement.

With everything to do and see in Cheyenne people should put it on their bucket list of places to experience.
