In a riverside town in Denmark, a little girl and a little boy become the best of friends. Gerda and Kai both come from poor families, with few toys or shiny clothes to wear, and they never get to ride in carriages. But they have each other. Tending the roses that bloom in the hanging boxes between the gables of their parents’ garrets, they form a neighborly bond. They sit together under the flowers, and in wintertime in the yard below, they pelt each other with snowballs, or stick coins to the windows and peer at each other through holes in the frost.

This year was all about adventure and exploring new countries. All together 9 weeks, 13 flights, 3 continents, 7 countries, 5 islands, 11 cities, countless villages. Thousands of photos. 33 blog posts. Feelings of all sorts. Happy smiles, crocodile tears, excitement, disappointments. I have encountered them all.

Black Lace for Brown Ladies
When I was in highschool, I was given tickets to a local community theater play. I don't remember it, it was a frothy little comedy, trendy at the time but not a classic. I do remember that towards the end of the play one of the actresses made a big entrance wearing a black lace dress and it blew my mind. It was so elegant! That dress became a goal, the way I envisioned myself as an adult. I soon discovered though, that black lace dresses were only made for white women, with built in linings that were flesh toned only for them. That elegance was beyond my grasp.

When I was a kid, my family used to take yearly vacations. Most of the time, we went to California. Where else would two little girls want their parents to take them? California has Disneyland and Disneyland is where all of our favorite people live. So, from the time I was three until I hit high school the four of us (eventually five of us) hit the road to the most magical place on Earth. While we were in California, we always went to San Diego for some beach time and to go to Sea World. My mom's favorite part of our trips was always going to seal beach in La Jolla just north of Sand Diego. Really it's La Jolla Cove, but it's always been seal beach to us. I'll admit, as a kid it wasn't as exciting to me. Playing in the ocean and ordering room service seemed like a much more fun time than standing around looking at seals from afar. On my most recent trip to San Diego, however, I finally got it.
