HOW LOSING MY JOB CATAPULTED ME ON A GLOBAL JOURNEY OF SELF DISCOVERY
It is mid January 2018. I am in my living room, suitcase open, all my stuff strewn across the floor. I’m not leaving, but returning. My roomate and co-worker Peter and I have spent the past 2 weeks on a work trip to Brazil. This was my fourth trip and though I love travel, I have come to dislike work travel. The past 6 months have been a cycle of being in Brazil for one month and home for one month only to return to Brazil again for a month. Splitting my time equally between two places makes me feel unsettled and disconnected from my friends. I did make friends in Brazil, learned a fair amount of Portuguese, and was able to do some exploring, but working 10-12 hour days 6 days a week on average left me pretty exhausted. Even so, I enjoyed Brazil enough that I chose to hang on to a job I disliked because of the opportunity to go there. It was a great experience that I wouldn’t ever take back. But I’m ready to be home for awhile...

Yellow Bricks
Yellow bricks, green balconies and winding streets, but not a Euro to my name, which is how I had once again found myself wandering aimlessly through the streets of Malta – this time a narrow street in Valletta. I’d spontaneously booked a trip to return home for the first time in just over a decade, however after miscalculating dates, I’d only been left with the few Euros I had changed on the way. I’d managed to get a week-long bus ticket (and some pastizzi) on the first day and figured I’d just explore until my money came in. I wasn’t worried. After spending entire days on various beaches, I decided to head to Valletta. The capital was as busy as I’d remembered it, streets flanked with bright balconies and numerous groups of elderly men gathered on steps outside buildings. The familiar language, and accent I assume I once had washing over my ears as I traced paths I had walked so many times as a child. The warm smell of imqaret permeated the air, bringing back memories I didn’t know existed. Every similarity providing comfort as I navigated through the onslaught of people headed for the market, however it wasn’t long before similarities became differences. I’m not sure whether it was the new shops in place of old, or that I was struggling to remember how to ask for imqaret without sounding like a tourist, but I had begun to feel very out of place.

From the beauty of mountains to the glittering sands of the shore, reviving voice of the tides that fades up smoothly as they embrace the shore, the fragrance of the dry sand when hit by the first drops of rain in the deep pine forests, ripples of small waves when the vital air strike against the lake, at this surprising instant the sudden chirruping of birds when they make flight nearby, these all are enhanced by the moments of the day, for instance, if it’s the moment of the sun to blaze & ready to sprinkle it’s luminosity over the world from the spack of sand till the peak of the mountains till the depth of waters, the beauty of nature spreading its magic beyond the horizon, & all these amazing sceneries are worth admiring & indulging one’s self in the serenity beyond all worries that keep us bothering making us avoid the blessings of nature spread at each & every step every now & then.
