Chasing Rainbows
If you’re forced, and how utterly terrible must it be if you’re forced to take only a 24 hour vacation, the only choice is to chase rainbows in Dublin, that lynchpin of the Emerald Isle with some of the cheapest flights from Chicago to Europe. As it’s been sung, you can go around the world, from Antarctica to Katmandu, and find an Irish pub—a place you’ll be welcomed with a kind smile and a cold pint. If you’re lucky, you might even get some fiddle, and if you’re really lucky they’ll be some black pudding (okay that one is personal taste).

My Day, My Way. Runner-Up in Twenty-Four Hours Challenge.
Want to spend a day with me? Let’s see what my perfect twenty-four hours look like. I’m retired, so I’ll stay in bed until I feel like getting up. When I wake up, I will doze for a bit before waking again. Then I’ll lie there a while, letting random thoughts float through my mind. After reciting what day it is, I'll decide the order of my perfect day. I won’t make myself get up early and get busy. I will move slowly and deliberately, breathing deeply. When I get out of bed, I must first push up the blackout shades; then the glorious morning greets me through the window.

A peaceful day in Nice.. Honorable Mention in Twenty-Four Hours Challenge.
Midnight. I should probably go to sleep but I can’t take my eyes off of the sky. That’s how I am spending every evening of each day during my yearly holiday in Nice. And I just learnt a new constellation. Swan.

Arizona - Hot for More than Just Temperature
Most people who don't know otherwise, think of Arizona as perpetually hot. Okay, yes, the bottom half of the state can be oppressive, especially in the summer, but winter is pleasant, and the farther north you go, the cooler it is, in general. Flagstaff has some good skiing at Snow Bowl.

The Magic of San Carlos. Runner-Up in Twenty-Four Hours Challenge.
The perfect stay in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico, starts with oceanside accommodations. I recommend The Hotel Fiesta Real, as shown above. The rooms aren't luxurious but look at the view! It's quiet, affordable, and conveniently located, and you won't be spending much time in your room anyway. One nice thing about San Carlos is that they cater to Americans, so most often, you will find someone who speaks English, at least to some extent.

One day in heaven
The above shot was taken on my birthday, treating myself to a Cornish cream tea in the most southerly café in England. Although I have been there for the last 30 years, at least once a year, I would always go back. When I drive down to the tiny carpark the deep blue water appears, with added rocks, birds and a few seals. I used to park at the main car park but health makes it difficult due to the steep paths.

Charleston, Ho! . Winner in Twenty-Four Hours Challenge.
Meet me at my apartment on Central Avenue at lunchtime in the summer of 1997 to begin this trip properly. We’re taking my blue Maxima, and fuck I-20 and I-26. We’re taking the backroads through Williston and Blackville, Denmark and Bamberg. We’re going to slip down the Piedmont to the Coastal Plain on a two-lane blacktop. You’ll know when it happens, the land leveling out from those long, steep hills on 28, the ones that crest so high you can see into the next county.

"There Are Wolves Up There!"
My professor friend K and I went for a hike to the mountains around the town of Mestia in Svaneti, the highest region in Georgia. We wanted to see the Koruldi Lakes near the glacier at the foot of the two-peak Ushba mountain of the Greater Caucasus Range separating Georgia and Russia.

How Texas Swimming Hole Reservations Actually Work
The first time it happened, I blamed the internet. I drove an hour west out of Austin on a Saturday in June, pulled up to the gate at Hamilton Pool, and got sent home by a very patient woman in a county polo shirt. No reservation, no entry. I had somehow decided that a park was a park and you paid at the door.
