The capital of Thailand, Bangkok is a cosmopolitan city offering loads of different experiences for discerning travellers whether they are first-time visitors, families, adventure seekers, solo visitors etc. Known as the land of Smiles, the Thai people are visitor-friendly and courteous. Furthermore, it is well known for its shopping scene from mega malls to vibrant markets, exotic Thai cuisine and more. Discover how to enjoy the best experiences of Bangkok as a confident solo traveller.

Your unique position as a Solo Visitor

Bangkok appeals to all visitors, however, discovering many facets of what Bangkok can offer to you as a solo visitor is enriching as you have time to wander at your pace and let understanding sink in such as when you visit the iconic Wat Arun with its serenity and the majestic Grand Palace that holds many historic memories of this nation.

Embrace each encounter be it cultural, historical, adventurous, or other as you amass a collection of memories of an enriching stay.

Stay connected

As a solo traveller staying connected is of utmost importance, and it is very easy to obtain a local SIM card as the same can be obtained on arrival at the airport and throughout the city from mobile service providers. The only requirement to obtain a SIM card is your passport for registration purposes, and the process takes only a few minutes. This is one of the initial things done by many solo travellers using a  5 star hotel in Bangkok.

With a SIM card, you have the comfort of staying connected while being on the move, access to useful information, the ability to hail a cab service like Grab and know your location as you explore this mega city.

Accommodation in Bangkok

There are ample accommodation options in Bangkok, hence you are spoilt for choice as a solo traveller. The prices vary as are locations, comfort and service levels at these different properties.

Consider your priorities while in Bangkok, a central location to explore the areas of interest to you. WiFi connectivity & facilities?, and Price? A safe location, proximity to public transport services (if you intend to commute often) etc. You may have other considerations too, factor all that in and decide on the best location and property. Many solo travellers tend to pick properties such as Pathumwan Princess Hotel due to the central location, presence of walkable links to Siam Paragon and MBK shopping malls and its proximity to Skytrain service that can take you to different parts of Bangkok in a few minutes beating the traffic snarls.

Have a travel plan

A plan helps solo travel as you want to explore and experience Bangkok. Solo travel in Bangkok offers greater flexibility and autonomy as you go about it as you don’t need to stick to a strict schedule but plan according to your preference with confidence.

For instance, if you are a culture vulture allocate more time for temple visits, natural scenery etc and less time for retail therapy. You can simply follow your heart and your pace. Fortunately, Bangkok is geared with a sound public transport system for solo visitors. Select the mode which is convenient for you. BTS Skytrain can whisk you to many places in a few minutes as stated earlier. But if you would go places on your own, renting a bike or scooter is possible.

Enjoy Culinary Delights

Bangkok city is a foodie’s paradise hence don’t miss savouring delightful Thai cuisine as you enjoy international cuisine that is widely served at restaurants and even your hotel.

However, don’t fail to embrace the street food in Bangkok, this is an ideal way to enjoy different Thai dishes and learn to eat like the locals. Pad Thai (Thai Noodle dish) is a hot favourite of many visitors to Bangkok and the sweet Mango sticky rice is a famous dessert that many visitors love. As you patronize street stalls select them with care, try the busier stalls as the food is fresh and tastier at such stalls.

Respect local customs and etiquette

As a solo visitor, you are responsible for your words and actions during your stay. Therefore, being aware of Thai customs and etiquette will ensure that you don’t offend the host nation unknowingly.

Thai Monarchy – The Thai Royal Family is highly respected, and visitors are expected to be respectful too verbally and in the presence of a Royal image.

Wai Greeting – Thai people greet with wai. This is done with both hands placed together in front of your chest and slightly bowing the head. If you receive a wai greeting respond in the same manner.

Dress – Always be modestly dressed when visiting religious sites. Covering the upper arms and the knees is expected.

Footwear – It is customary to remove footwear at religious sites when visiting someone’s home and some restaurants. Do as locals do.
