The prevalent word for the year 2021 should be selflessness.

The year kicked off from the ashes of 2020 with aspirations to be a better year. It has achieved that when compared with the previous year. In terms of the economy, the pandemic, global health, and the environment.

Selflessness in the case of wearing masks. Not just to protect oneself but others around you. No matter how uncomfortable it feels.

Selflessness in the sense that whether you believe vaccines are efficient or not, you go with the science and take the jab. Even if it is just to protect others around you.

Selflessness by our health workers who have watched colleagues die in the line of duty, but continue treating COVID patients, anyway.

Selflessness by the scientists and immunologists who sacrificed months on the job. Away from their loved ones to ensure we have access to safe vaccines one year after the pandemic hit.

It is only logical that the most powerful woman of the year 2021 is a selfless person, above all else.

“There’s no question in my mind that anyone’s personal wealth is the product of a collective effort, and of social structures which present opportunities to some people, and obstacles to countless others.” — MacKenzie Scott

Billionaire philanthropist, Mackenzie Scott, who is currently the third richest woman in the world; the 21st wealthiest individual in the world, has embodied selflessness in the past two years.

Scott signed the giving pledge in May 2019 and has since given away $8.6 billion to 780 organizations in donations and gifts. This is with no extra fanfare or bureaucracy. She does her research on the work being done by the non-profit, together with her husband, Dan.

She is actively contributing to causes that promote issues including gender equity, racial justice, public health, climate change, global development. All, important sectors of our world today.

“I have a disproportionate amount of money to share. I will keep at it until the safe is empty.” — Mackenzie Scott

People have said Scott is revolutionizing the philanthropic sector and leading the way on how donations should be made. Without stringent rules to the benefactors. Without a circus of media witnesses. Many people also disagree with how fast and flexible her donations are. They are worried on her behalf, but it’s a good thing it is her money to spend. Not theirs.

“Because we believe that teams with experience on the front lines of challenges will know best how to put the money to good use, we encouraged them to spend it however they choose… It empowers receivers by making them feel valued and by unlocking their best solutions. Generosity is generative.” — Mackenzie Scott.

In a Forbes list that includes women from 30 countries and territories; features 40 CEOs and 19 heads of state, having a philanthropist like Mackenzie at the fore is tremendous. Having two philanthropists in the top five, in the person of Mackenzie Scott and Melinda Gates is ground-breaking. For women. For the world.

It is a reminder that actual power is not in heading big corporations. Or countries. Those are important, but not the ultimate.

Real power stems from the ability to touch lives and lead social change with the resources available to you.

“The effect you have on others is the most valuable currency there is.” — Jim Carrey.
