The vagina is an amazingly complex organ. It can be a source of great pleasure, but it also has many other vital functions that are easily overlooked when it comes to our health and wellness. Just ask Dr. Cynthia “Cyn” Wesley, Board-certified OBGYN, a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Author of the newly released book, Beauty Below: A Guide to Intimate Wellness and Beauty For Dark Skin.

In her new book, Dr. Cyn lets every woman of color know the vagina needs some TLC just like any other part of the body. There is not a topic that goes uncovered as she addresses some of the most intimate issues women of darker tones face. Dr. Cyn, who is also an intimate skincare specialist, has helped thousands of women understand and maximize the skincare of the vulva through live videos and while professionally speaking.

I was able to catch up with this busy yet amazing woman to let the world know who she is and what she has going on.

Dr. Cyn, I am so excited to be speaking to you and am grateful you took a moment to chat with me. You have so many amazing things going on. But first, let’s talk about your beginning. Where are you from, and what did you want to be when you grew up?

I was born and raised in Charleston, West Virginia. Since I can remember, I wanted to be a physician. I used to sit and watch every doctor show that was on television, from Mash to Quincy, MD, with my grandmother.

You started as an all-American cheerleader. How did this attribute to the evolution of your success?

For any athlete to be successful, you must be disciplined and a great multitasker. With cheerleading, you learn how to do all of the above with a smile on your face.

Your Virtual Gyn is unique. What was the inspiration or factor that was present to create Virtual Gyn?

The driving force behind creating Virtual Gyn is two-pronged. First, as a busy mom, I’m always looking for ways to save time and complete my to-do list without missing work. Virtual Gyn provides that opportunity. Secondly, the pandemic made the decision to launch this program a no-brainer.

Why is this Virtual Gyn so important (especially women of color)?

Due to the history of race relations in the United States, women of color often harbor some mistrust with the healthcare system. Some even feel uncomfortable questioning their current healthcare provider. Virtual Gyn provides a confidential, safe environment to receive a second opinion in reference to your gynecological care.

As a Gyn and professional speaker, when did you know you wanted to become an author?

When seeing patients in the office or hospital setting, I approach the conversation as if I am talking with my sister, cousin, or auntie. A few years ago, my nurse told me that I present complex medical issues in a simplistic and relatable fashion. She encouraged me to put mine beside lessons in writing.

Let’s talk about your book, Beauty Below: A Guide to Intimate Wellness and Beauty for Dark Skin. What was the inspiration for writing it, and what do you want Black women to get from it?

The catalyst to writing this book really came from my own experience. As a cheerleader, I struggled with grooming my bikini line. This led to a lot of pain, embarrassment, and shame. After becoming a gynecologist, I realized that many women, especially Black women, also suffer from similar problems. Unfortunately, we don’t talk about intimate wellness in the Black community. I know this book will help many women become more knowledgeable about female genitalia and empower them to have true stewardship over their bodies.

Do you have an official release date for your book?

Yes. The release date was September 27, 2021.

You are quite active in your community. How do you balance motherhood and all of the other hats you wear and still make time for yourself?

As a former cheerleader, you learn to be like Nike and just do it. With that said, I am sometimes guilty of not prioritizing self-care. I’m blessed to have a great squad of girlfriends and family members who keep me in check.

How can people connect with you and everything you have going on?

My book can be ordered at www.BeautyBelowBook.com. I have a product line for intimate wellness and beauty that is due to launch in November 2021. You can visit our website at www.BeautyBelowMD.com Everything going on in my busy life can be found at www.DrCynOBGYN.com
