Recap of Track & Field in 2022

As the college track and field season has come to a close, we will take time to take a look at women in the sport who competed and made things happen in 2022.

Kaelin Roberts - USC

USC's Kaelin Roberts participated in just three meets in 2022 but she won at least one event on each occasion. She started the season on USC's winning 1,600-meter relay squad at the Trojan Invite. Roberts followed that with a 100 meters win at the Chris Rinne Twilight meet before being on the winning 400-meter relay team at the USC vs UCLA meet. A native of Long Beach, California, Roberts won her first NCAA championship as a fourth of the winning 1,600-meter relay team at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in 2018. The next year she won the gold in the open 400 meters at the NCAA indoor meet. In 2021 she snatched the gold again when she crossed the finish line in the 400 meters at 50.84 in the NCAA indoor final.

Alexus Pyles - Ohio State

After a career that began in 2017, Alexus Pyles overcame injuries throughout her career to claim the Big Ten championships in the heptathlon and long jump. Her performance also helped Ohio State win the overall team conference championship. Pyles nearly took a third gold medal when she finished second in the 100-meter hurdles at the Big Ten meet. Her outdoor season efforts allowed her to compete in the 100-meter hurdles and heptathlon at the NCAA Championships where she earned All-American honors. From Clarksburg, Maryland, Pyles was a winner of two bronze medals when she placed third in the 60-meter hurdles and pentathlon at the 2019 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Rachel Robertson - Florida A&M

Atlanta, Georgia native Rachel Robertson had the season of her career in 2022. As Florida A&M switched from the MEAC to the SWAC, the 6-1 Robertson stood tall amongst the competition. The outdoor SWAC gold medals in the high jump and triple jump went to Robertson. At the East Preliminary she placed in the top ten and qualified for the NCAA championships in the triple jump where she became an All-American for the first time in her career. During indoor season Robertson was first at the SWAC meet in the high jump and second in the triple jump.

Chidinma Ogba - Jacksonville

After transferring from Troy, Jacksonville's Chidinma Ogba brought her championship pedigree to her new program and delivered this year. Ogba won two gold medals at the ASUN Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 400 meters and 400-meter relay. Prior to that she closed her indoor season with an ASUN championship in the 1,600-meter relay before placing third in the 200 meters. At Troy, the native at Fort Worth, Texas became the 400 meters champion with a 53.66 finish as a freshman at the Sun Belt Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2018. She won the indoor silver medal in the 400 meters and a bronze in the 200 meters in 2019. At her final Sun Belt indoor meet Ogba collected another bronze medal in the 200 meters in 2020.

Azariah McGee-Grantham - Western Michigan

Western Michigan's Azariah McGee-Grantham is a up and coming sprinter from Union, New Jersey. During her freshman season, McGee-Grantham scored a win in her first collegiate race taking first in the 60-meters at teh Central Michigan Invitational. She went on to claim the silver medal at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships when she crossed the finish line at 7.54. During the outdoor season she qualified for the 100 meters finals at the Mid-American Conference meet with a career best time of 11.92 during the preliminary round.
