After showing little mercy to Fox Lane on Saturday, March 25, John Jay was no more obliging to Brewster on Monday. The Wolves scored an 11-0 victory, and while there was plenty of status quo with a large returning contingent of players, the draw position had a new look and didn’t disappoint.

“I’m having so much fun because I’m feeling really comfortable with two great midfielders by my side," said Jojo Degl, and six combined goals by Mia Puccio and Annabel Brennan provided the proof.

The game began with John Jay keeping play on the Brewster side of the field, and Degl would introduce the Bears to what was to come by hitting the cross bar at 19:08. Brewster didn’t get much time to gasp either.  Brennan took the ball at the 15, juked between two defenders and came point blank in front of the goal. Lindsay Smith didn’t stand a chance, and Brennan got her team on the board at 18:54.

The Bears did win the next draw. But the John Jay defense forced a loose ball, and Meghan Condon got the turnover up the field to Brennan. She found Shannon Nolan in the corner, and Brewster was whistled for a shooting space penalty on Puccio’s receipt. She went straight for the goal and went over head for a 2-0 lead at 17:50.

Then the Degl show added a sister. After Smith made a save on Puccio shot on goal, the Brewster goalie’s attempt to flip the ball ahead was deflected by Finja Degl. The younger picked up the ball above the crease, and even without the goal that built a 3-0 lead, the eighth grader has been made to feel at home. “It’s really sweet how they hype me up,” she said. “They are so kind, and I could never expected that from the team.”

Of course, Degl makes acceptance pretty easy and further earned the team’s confidence by being ready to do whatever is called upon. Shannon Nolan in particular, the senior has been hoping to increase her versatility, and Coach Jess Martin agreed to give her some work on the Elbow.

So Degl played from the X-spot, and hitting Nolan on the cut gave the goal scorer a look and touch that she really likes. “It’s super fun because I get to run to the pass and then give the passer a big hug,” said the senior.

Nolan was too far ahead of the play to show the love on the next goal. But Puccio’s steal to start the break was no doubt appreciated and probably good enough to go unspoken.

Smith did make two great saves to keep the home team honest to close the half, though. Of course, John Jay’s senior partners in crime quickly put off any semblance of law and order.  Puccio charged hard twice for the net to make it 8-0, and Nolan found Brennan and Puccio on consecutive possessions to yield a 9-0 lead.

Not done yet, Nolan found JoJo Degl twice to run the clock, and completing the 11-0 victory, had McDonough praising her on-call offense. “Our attack is fluid, and we want all the players to feel confident from all points of attack,” she concluded. “I’m so proud of all our offensive players for staying true to our offensive identity.”

Continuing the roll, the Wolves ride down 684 resulted in a 15-5 victory over Rye on Thursday.
