AEW Women's World Championship Match Set for Double or Nothing

A pair of familiar foes will face off in a title contest at AEW's fourth annual Double or Nothing event

It is hard to believe that All Elite Wrestling's first ever major event, Double or Nothing, took place almost three years ago. The company's launch in 2019 saw four pay-per-views take place before their flagship show, AEW Dynamite, premiered on October 2, 2019. Since then, AEW has become an absolute phenomenon, and fans find themselves getting ready for AEW's fourth annual Double or Nothing event. Part of the event's festivities include an absolute clash for the AEW Women's World Championship between fighting champion Thunder Rosa and ambitious challenger Serena Deeb.

Thunder Rosa's road to the top was a very thrilling one, indeed. She had spent a year feuding with then-champion Britt Baker; a feud that began before Rosa was even signed to AEW. It was a heated feud that saw both women throw everything at each other, including other combatants, as Britt even attempted to enlist Mercedes Martinez to take out Rosa. After Rosa came up short against Britt at Revolution, she earned another title opportunity at St. Patrick's Day Slam on March 16, 2022, this time winning the title in a steel cage at her hometown of San Antonio. Rosa's first successful title defense came against Nyla Rose weeks later, and this contest at Double or Nothing will mark her first PPV appearance as champion.

Serena Deeb engaged in a months-long feud with Hikaru Shida

Thunder Rosa faces a familiar foe in the form of Serena Deeb, who has been on an immense tear as a villainess in the last several months. Months after returning from her injury hiatus, Serena defeated Hikaru Shida at AEW's 2nd Anniversary Show on October 6, 2021, and later attacked Shida in brutal fashion, turning heel in the process. We would see Serena on AEW Rampage facing various opponents to see if they could last five minutes with her, while her feud with Shida continued for several months, which included Shida eliminating Serena from the TBS Championship tournament. Their feud finally came to an end on April 27 of this year, when Serena defeated Shida in a long-overdue grudge match, which ended up cementing Serena's status as the #1 Contender.

As I stated, Serena and Rosa are no strangers to each other. It was Serena who dethroned Rosa as NWA Women's World Champion in October of 2020, an instant classic between two phenoms. This contest will also deliver as advertised; Rosa and Serena are two of the best to compete in the squared circle.

Julia Hart's long-awaited heel turn is still pending

Elsewhere in AEW's Women's Division, Julia Hart turned heel. Well...almost. We have been wonderfully obsessed with this for the last five months; it was all the way back in December of 2021 that Malakai Black sprayed his ominous black mist into Julia's left eye, and we have seen two things come from that attack. One, Julia donning an eyepatch and looking absolutely bad-ass, and two, Julia's demeanor change completely, much to the confusion of her cohorts, the Varsity Blonds. It's a foregone conclusion that Julia is on her way to joining Malakai's House of Black faction, and for the first time since that mist hit her, we received the biggest step in that direction.

So after Brian Pillman Jr.'s heartfelt speech which referenced his father's former roommate (a fact I didn't know until watching that promo), Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh, House of Black entered and attacked the Blonds, while Julia sat perched on the turnbuckle. After engaging in a staredown with Malakai, Julia gave an evil grin and received a chair with intent for her to use it on Griff Garrison. She had it up with that intent, but she backed out. I really thought that Julia would make the turn; the fans did as well, they cheered loudly when the tease happened. Even so, this isn't over. This is the closest that Julia's come to becoming a villainess, and I would think that her journey would be completed as early as Double or Nothing.

Dynamite's main event saw Mercedes Martinez and Deonna Purrazzo face each other for the undisputed Ring of Honor Women's World Championship, as both women held claim to the title. The reason for this was because of Deonna's inability to attend Supercard of Honor XV in April of 2022, leading to Mercedes facing and defeating Willow Nightingale in a match to crown the interim champion. Deonna had held the ROH title as one of two titles she had held simultaneously; the other being the AAA Reina de Reinas Championship, which she lost to Taya Valkyrie at Impact Wrestling's Rebellion event.

Sure enough, Mercedes ended up defeating Deonna via submission, making her the official ROH Women's World Champion. With ROH also having a connection to Impact Wrestling, we could see Mercedes make appearances on that program, and as for Deonna, it should be interesting to see what feuds she'll be in after being dethroned.
