The Getaway
My hands are cold and shaking; and I know it’s not from the icy cocktail glass my fingers are wrapped around. Despite the warm island breezes and lazy swaying of palm trees all around, my anxiety meter is still way off the charts.

The archway looms over her, tall, imposing and covered in clusters of soft pink and white roses, it’s rather daunting after everything that has just happened. She rubs her raw cheeks, the feeling of tears still there despite the lack of fluid left in her eyes. Tomorrow was supposed to be the happiest day of her life, she was supposed to marry ‘the one’. Right now she would have been attending her rehearsal dinner but instead she is sitting under the elegant archway on the beach, hugging her knees to her chest as she embeds herself in the sand. Her, now ex, fiancée had asked for the engagement ring back after they broke her heart but she refused and left them there with their hand outstretched. That beautiful sapphire embedded in expensive silver is currently on its way to the bottom of the ocean. She knows it’s cliche, tossing the ring into the sea, but she understands why the women in the movies do it, it really does feel liberating. However that feeling didn't last long and she was soon sobbing her heart out on the white sandy beach the day before what should have been the best day of her life.

“I hate you!” was the last thing reportedly swung into the evening heat before celebration morphed into something other. Serena had slunk into the sand and away from the lights, down towards the ocean and the impending late summer night. Swaying down to the rocky border, Serena decided to settle herself — nestling into a nook within the rocks, a gritty pool swirling beneath her swinging feet. She embraced herself, shrinking from the breeze which kissed every glimmering droplet of spray which the waves unleashed in their play.
