Why Biden's Win is About More Than the American Presidency

American Election 2020

For many of us, watching the actions of Trump over the last four years has brought on a wide variety of emotions; fear, confusion, amusement, incredulity and sometimes just downright anger.

Some of us understood why he won over Hillary. For a start there was too much history there. Not just with her own political career but also the tainted political career of her husband, former President Bill Clinton. We could see why voters in America couldn't justify turning out in their droves for Hillary and we understood that those who leaned in a Conservative direction would believe that Trump was perhaps the lesser of two evils. We understood and yet, we despaired.

Presidential Debate 2016

There is no version of reality where Hillary could have been more incompetent than Trump or anymore of an embarrassment to the Presidency. World leaders laughed at Trump, they disliked meeting with him, they found him to be a liar and a fantasist, because he was all of those things.

For four years the world has woken up wondering what new and ridiculous thing he's said or more bizarrely tweeted and we've watched his speeches through our fingers.

On the run up to Election day 2020, one thing became extremely clear to me. This wasn't just about who the next President would be, it was about common decency, human rights, respect and returning to a world where justice was done.

Though avid Trump supporters, continue to insist that their President made America great again, the rest of us could see it for what it was. The Free World had become a laughing stock. What was once seen as the epicentre of freedom was now seen as a place where the majority of people of colour, those with disabilities, those who identified as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and women, no longer felt safe. America became a nation clearly divided and terrified, while the world became increasingly terrified for them.

The argument I have heard most consistently when it comes to supporting Donald J Trump, is that he did wonders for the economy. Yeah, so did Hitler, and no, before you jump down my throat, I am not saying that Trump can be compared entirely with Hitler, but only because I do not wish the undermine the true horrors of the Holocaust. The comparison I am making and truly believe in, is that during his rise to ultimate power in Germany, Hitler saved the German economy, that however, didn't mean that he was any less evil, unstable or insane. Hitler blamed the Jewish people for all of his countries woes just as Trump blamed immigrants. History is a lesson! We can learn from it if we understand it. Drawing a comparison between Hitler and Trump is exactly what we should be doing as a society if the evidence exists to make those comparisons to ensure the same thing does not happen again.

When the news reached me that Biden was to be the 46th President of The United States, I cheered and I cried, because for me, as with so many others, this was a victory for everyone that believes in a better world, full of love and acceptance.

People Around the World Celebrate Biden's Win

The fact that Biden won, restored my faith in humanity. It meant that the facts mattered, that liars and narcissists don't always win and it meant that people believed in more than what a charismatic, egocentric, 'self made' billionaire who spent more time making a barely watchable, poor imitation of Alan Sugar's television programme, than he ever did invested in politics told them, repeatedly and with an intensity bordering on psychotic, what they should believe.

It's unsurprising that Trump has refused to bow out gracefully and has instead continued with the trend of piling lies on top of lies without being to provide any substantial evidence to back up his outrageous claims of electoral fraud. No one really expected that he would do the right and honourable thing and it wouldn't shock me if he was still proclaiming his imaginary 2020 victory on his deathbed. Regardless, the election is over. The people have spoken and hopefully, we will begin to see a healing process in America, as the gap between the Nation is closed by Biden's Presidency.
