There was a small wooden sign on the side road riddled with bullet holes that read "Joint United States Military Advisory Group, Thailand (JUSMAGTHAI) Straight ahead Dumb Ass." JUSMAGTHAI is located on a Royal Thai Armed Forces military compound approximately two kilometers from the American Embassy, on Sathorn Tai Road. This was my home for 26 months and 13 days. I spent maybe a month total actually on the base, the rest of the time I was Laos and Cambodia. I jumped off at Udorn RTAF where I had a cot in the back of a 1945 quonset hut, an ice box, and a hot plate. I was 20 years old. This was 1972. The Vietnam war was deescalating only no one told the North Vietnamese, the Laotians, or Pol Pot.

So I know we have all been there. Pulling our hair out trying to schedule movers, watching the movers pack your personal belongings, waiting what seems like FOREVER to get your household goods, come to find out when they get there things got damaged and/or lost and they can't be replaced til months down the road cause claims is taking forever? Yeah, I feel you. I just made a huge move from the US to Germany. This was our first PCS ever with the army. When we moved to our first duty station, I moved us out there. I moved all of our stuff. It was way less complicated than going through the army. Granted, I get it, you have three kids and no way do you feel like packing their toys and clothes. In that case, the army is a helping hand. But for the few who are new to PCSing or are even veterans and think they know everything, I've come up with a few helpful tips to make life so much easier.

I am often asked, "What is there to do at the beach in the winter?" Living in a beach town and a military town, there is ALWAYS something to do. We often have weather extremes all year on the Outer Banks. We had spring-like weather for much of December 2017. I have lived on the beach for over 30 years and moved to Jacksonville last year. Like a lot of locals, I know about activities at the beaches, art galleries, microbreweries, local clubs, fitness clubs, family destinations, garden centers, churches etc. As a mother of two very active young adults, I spent many hours on school field trips, as a classroom volunteer, and a sports mom. I was also the co-owner of a well established local nursery, growing facility, landscaping company and retail store. I was a physician recruiter for over 20 years. I taught various gardening and art classes, as well. I also contributed through my photography and many blogs to both written and personal engagements, all over eastern North Carolina.
