If you think dating a typical civilian is hard, don't even think of being a military spouse. It's one of the hardest kinds of relationships out there, and often ends up being a very lonely, rough way to live life.

As a military girlfriend or military spouse, you will have to hold down the fort while your partner is way. If you're a military member, you will spend a lot of time working brutal hours—and possibly worrying about jody interfering in your life.

This list of epic memes show exactly what being a military spouse means, and why it's such a rough but rewarding life.

Straight from the US Army

This unique graphic comes straight from the US Army's website, and basically gives you the numbers on what it's like to be a military spouse. Most people in this relationship type have a high level of satisfaction, but do get stressed from a lack of child care, deployments, or trying to find employment that moves with them.

The numbers say it all—being a military spouse is tough but satisfying.

It Sucks

Most people would never imagine being able to go without their spouses for more than a month, but being a military spouse means that you may stay separate for years. You never know how long a deployment may last, and at times, you might not know if your spouse will actually come back.

War is brutal, and not just on the soldiers. Military wife life is pretty terrifying when you realize that you might not see your spouse alive again.

You're Not Alone

A surprising amount of women and men find a lot of guilt in expectations they don't feel like they meet when they first start being a military spouse. They may feel they don't contribute enough, or feel like they aren't doing enough for the kids, or otherwise feel like they're "not enough."

Sometimes, you may feel guilty about being a military spouse. Believe it or not, a lot of military spouses feel that way. A good perk of becoming a military wife is that there's always a community that supports you.

That's why a lot of military wives ended up joining together to make this photo series, and talk about the issues military spouses face.

Over 30? Yeah...

Don't ask why, but a lot of the more prominent military wives you'll see around the base will be under 30. If you're older, you will feel like you're the oldest one of the group... because you probably are.

A Classic Recipe

No one ever seems to tell you how much courage and patience being a military spouse requires. Even though it's common knowledge that deployments happen, it's really difficult to explain how badly that can affect you.

This meme basically explains military spouse life in a nutshell, and why military wives are the best.

Military Dependent?

If you ask most military spouses, one of the most aggravating parts about being a military spouse is being called a "dependent." This awesome meme shows a truth most civilians don't get: it's a two-way street. When a service member leaves for active duty, someone has to hold down the fort.

That person is usually a military spouse, and they often hold a service member's civilian life together while they're doing their thing. They do it all on low pay, while living on military bases, and possibly also dealing with hearing people refer to their kids as "military brats."

"Do What?"

Being a military spouse means that you need to give a lot more support than a typical person would in a marriage. It also means you'll hear civilians say things like, "I could never do that."

If you're a military spouse, you already know the eye roll that you're tempted to do after hearing this phrase too many times.

OPSEC Is Real

If you want to make sure that your spouse doesn't get in trouble (or killed), then being a military wife means that you'll also have to practice OPSEC. OPSEC is a series of practices that ensure that no hackers or non-military forces get details by listening to you talking to friends about your spouse.

It takes some getting used to, and you will sound sketchy as hell, but it's a good way to make sure that you avoid causing harm to the ones you love.

What My Friends Think I Do...

Everyone seems to have a different idea of what being a military spouse means. Society thinks it means lounging around, doing nothing more than drinking lemonade on base. Parents seem to think it means being a 1950s housewife. Friends think you're all alone, weeping over letters.

Realistically? You're going nuts trying to keep the kids quiet and the vacuum cleaner intact.

Worth the Wait

One of the hardest parts about being a military spouse is waiting. After the war is fought, you finally get to see your lover—and with hope, will be able to have tons of fun together for years to come.

Being a military spouse is downright brutal when it comes to time apart, and in some cases, may even mean that you deal with soldiers that go totally dark, leaving you wondering if your partner is alive. But, when you finally see him, you'll realize all the pain was totally worth it.
