Whats today? Today is a special day because you can’t take it with you. We all experience today differently because time doesn’t stop for any of us. This article talks briefly about a few things we might experience and how each experience will be unique because of our particular background in life. We cannot get away from living in this moment and feeling everything around us no matter how hard we try and live in the past or future, even if we tried to.

“What does ‘today’ mean to you?

To me ‘today’ represents the fact that time is running through us all equally. So even if we tried to live in the past, it would not be the same because of the present moment. It is impossible to love the past as much as we love today. We can definitely love the past more than we love today, but that isn’t going to take us any further than today.

Contemporary philosophy is concerned with the essence of being, it moves around the notion that the life we live today is all we are, and that it is impossible to think that we could have produced more. The essence of people is what they are doing in this moment. We can only think about how we are going about our lives now. We cannot think about how we were thinking back then, because that is an experience in itself. We are constantly thinking that this is today or that was this day, but this is today. What we are experiencing now is what we think about and about the future is what we talk about.

What is the underlying meaning?

The underlying meaning of today for me is that the future is a completely unknown, unpredictable moment. We can all prepare for it but when it arrives it’s never what we thought it would be. We are constantly living for an uncertain future, we spend all our time preparing for it, when we should be enjoying every minute we have together. We are all living for the future, but we are in the present moment now, and this is the only time we can know anything.”

“Let’s Talk About Today”

Contemporary artists deal with the theme of the present day in a variety of ways. Music has been a major part of the philosophy of today since Beethoven wrote Symphony no. 9 in C minor, called “Choral Symphony.” “This may be the final symphony of the human race,” he declared. “This work will express the emptiness of human existence and the overwhelming greatness of nature. Laurie Anderson’s 1983 “Waiting for the Miracle” dealt with the notion of being in this moment and still being awaiting the next one. Bjork’s 1993 album “Utopia” featured the theme of being in this moment and wishing for a better tomorrow. Various artists covered Tom Petty’s “Breakdown” on the 2002 album “Songs and Stories.” The original by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers was originally about a relationship that went wrong but was rewritten to cover a time when people live for the next day.

Yes — “I can not make you love me today,” on the 2007 album “Athens” expressed how the past can’t be as much fun as the present because it will never be the same as what we have in the present .

Today is what you make of it. It is all we have in our life and we have to make the most of it. It is a challenge. We must always maintain the desire to make something of the present, to improve it, to fix it or make the best of it. We cannot live for the tomorrow. We must continually be aware of the only thing that is now.
