humanity
Mental health is a fundamental right; the future of humanity depends on it.
A Small Act of Kindness
As we age, things become more complex. We can only see our ability to do so many things. A young family had moved next and had taken care of the more arduous chores. In the day, I was capable and raised my kids, but age got ahold of me. I used to be able to keep up with everything, but my husband is not doing so well either. The maintenance of things is only getting more complicated. At least we have neighborly help. The neighbor is a much younger man and will mow the lawn when he does his lawn. It is a significant help with my husband’s heart problems that the more physical work was not safe. Time can be so cruel when things start to change. I was young and agile, but now I can hardly move with the condition.

Finding Inner Peace on the Island of Bali
I dragged myself off the plane and into the humidity of Bali at the Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar. I was happy to have a few days to myself despite being exhausted. It was mid-September 2017 and I would be getting on another plane in a little over a week. That flight would last far longer than the four hours I had just endured.

Overthinking Kindness
I made it a goal to enter all of the writing challenges on this site. My genre of choice tends to be fantasy, so forcing myself to practice writing poetry and realistic fiction was a good exercise if not a great exploration of my own writing style. I saw that the newest challenge was about an act of kindness explored through the recipient’s perspective, and I thought it sounded like a sweet idea. For two days, I sifted through my memories, trying to come up with a moment worth telling, and I came to a discovery.

A Wee Toilet Tale
There has long been held an urban myth in Scotland, that according to law, if someone asks a homeowner for use of their toilet, they are legally obliged to let them. According to the Law Commission, though, there is nothing of the sort. The thought is it was borne of Scottish people taking pride in being hospitable. I am including this point in the preamble to the tale below to give some context.

Jake. Top Story - September 2024.
I'm never sure what to expect when my partner and I arrive for these exchanges. Most of the time, the people we meet don't know, either. This was clearly no exception. When our little sedan pulled up to the curb, the young woman looked petrified. I stepped out of the vehicle and opened the back door. Jake bounded from the back seat and I released the breath I'd been holding. He was home!

The Woman in the Cafe. Top Story - September 2024.
The bell jingles against the door as yet another person walks into the cramped cafe. Unlike some of the others coming in on their lunch break, she comes in with a genuine smile, brightening up the space and I'm sure the barista's day. Poor girl has had a line of sour people today.

The Power of Small Kindness
It was one of those days when everything just felt wrong. You know the type: when you wake up late, spill coffee on your shirt, and can’t find your keys. I should have known from the moment my alarm failed to go off that the day would be an uphill battle. I rushed through my morning routine, scrambled out the door, and somehow made it to work in time. But even there, it felt like the world was working against me—emails piling up, meetings running longer than expected, and my computer freezing just as I finished an important report.

Parallel Universes
Have you ever been in a situation that felt strangely familiar, like you’ve already experienced it? This sensation is called déjà vu, a French term meaning “already seen.” While there are many scientific explanations for déjà vu, one of the more fascinating ideas is that it could be linked to parallel universes. Could déjà vu be a moment when two different realities overlap? Let’s explore this intriguing theory and see what it might reveal about our world.
