Scars they cannot see

reality of trauma

Maybe you experience this yourself or know someone who does, maybe you've seen a person who does and may not know they do. Unfortunely in the world we live in now, there are still people who see physical scars and are disgusted. There still people who think it does not need to be done, there are still people who sit wonder why someone just ended their life. There are still people who claim they did not need to do that to themselves and that they were there for them. But in reality maybe they were not there at the right times.

Its one of those situations that we never know how to navigate, how to respond or when to act. Every persons story have similarities but in ways are entirely different. And again with deep sorrow within me, I have realised even if one person helped the other. The help may not come or help may not be given, and they are left alone. I think now its the time that we not only try for professional help but when that does not come, we need to be there for that person instead.

And yes it is just as mentally draining on both sides but in the end it could be worth a life continuing. It could giving them something they always sought after in life. It could also spare an indescribable amount of pain to family, loved ones and friends. But of course this is only if that person now has help whether its from a professional, loved one or a stranger. It would not solve anything until that person has another person to help them get back to even ground.

Of course people can see the scars some put on themselves but do they see the real scars beneath that surface. Do those people realise it was for a reason and for what ever reason it was for it is a cry for help. Whether the person made those scars knows it or not. I for one used to hide my physical scars thinking it was hideous and I would be punished for it. But later down the line, I came to the conclusion that actually I was just scared. In case someone saw and the help they provided came and disappeared again. Then I would be alone again and back at square one. I was also hiding terrible secrets that I knew if got out and the help was not enough, well it would not have even been worth the try.

The real face of trauma is not always obvious as we should know a smile can hide a lot. What about our bodies, does any one see what they hide?. Does any one see the toll our body shows when trauma is lurking under the surface. Do they see the weight that is carried, the never ending tiredness, the fear of actions, words and sounds. Do they hear the same voices that plague the victims mind when they try to think of any goodness in their life. The list gets longer and time and time again, no one sees them there to far down within us. The surge of sickness when they wake, the shivering of being touched or not being able to breath then sat between people. The words people speak to you good or bad may provoke something inside that sends chills and doubt through them. Its also feeling uncomfortable with people that are close to you at times.

Some may not even class these factors as scars but really they are, they are the things that the person struggles with because they cannot heal them. They never will. The hidden scars can only heal to a degree in my opinion and this is when the person learns to cope to an extend with such difficulties. Others may see us as fixed or fine but we still need help maybe not a lot but still some. We are not bad people, just people who had unwanted or unfortunate experiences. We do not deserve to be ignored or avoided but yet still out there are people who think, we do because we take up too much time.
