It is generally said that the pregnancy phase is the happiest period in a woman's life, because of all the attention and pampering that women get. But it can vary from person to person. Considering physical health, some pregnant women might develop diabetes when pregnant. Likewise, there are high chances that pregnancy will take a toll on mental health also, so it is essential to take care of one's mood; emotions are very important.

Both Men and Women might develop issues during the pregnancy phase.

  1. Depression: For weeks or months at a time, you feel sad or irritated. Before becoming pregnant, some females may have depression. But for a variety of purposes, it can also begin during pregnancy— for instance, if a female is not pleased about being pregnant or has a bunch of pressure at a job or home.
  2. Anxiety: It is a sense of fear or worries about stuff that might occur. If you're worried a bit anyway, during pregnancy, many factors can stress you out. You might think you're not going to be a nice mom or you're not going to be able to keep a child.

These are the most common mental health issues and apart from this bipolar, eating disorders, OCD and PTSD are some of the issues that might occur.

When to visit a doctor

Monitoring their mental health and well-being is a good idea for all expectant mothers and their associates. Keep an eye on indications you may need assistance and be prepared to take initiative if:

  • you have felt constantly sad (e.g. depressed or worried);
  • adverse ideas and emotions begin to impact your capacity to work as usual;
  • demonstrating indications of depression, such as loss of concern, or feeling desperate or unable to deal;
  • getting nervous or worried most or all the moment;
  • or develop obsessive or compulsive behaviors;
  • And most importantly, if you get suicidal thoughts in pregnancy.

Factors responsible for these issue

Past mental health issues, drug or alcohol problems, not having enough support, dealing with a hard phase, current or past abuse can lead to mental health issues. Also, it is normal to have a worry or fear about pregnancy or about being a mother. Sometimes you might even feel stressed about it. People who are not ready for pregnancy are more prone to depression and anxiety. This does not imply that every new mother facing difficulties will create a mental wellness situation—a combination of distinct factors impacts them differently .

Treatment

One method to manage mental issues is medication, but do not take medications without a doctor's prescription. Always consult a doctor to help you with the issues. Talking to a therapist or a counselor can also help you overcome your stress and other issues. Many females discover consolation in operations such as yoga, practice, and meditation.

Pregnancy itself can be stressful and women can be worried about a lot of thoughts like when do you start showing when you’re pregnant, what are the do’s and don’ts, etc. But here are few protective factors that help the pregnant women overcome the mental health issues. A close friend or a family with whom you can share your thoughts without the fear of being judged can help you overcome issues. A sense of positive identity, and having good problem solving and coping skills might help you analyse things. Taking good care of oneself, both physically and mentally is very important. So sitting back, surrounding yourself with positive people, and being optimistic will make your pregnancy period a harmonious one.
