Era tells me a story about her husband Will and marijuana. Will had difficulty sleeping. They went to a sleeping center in 2017 to try to figure out the problem in Edmonds, WA. He did a sleep study with all the wires and everything. They found that he does not go into the stage of deep sleep. It made him tired all the time. It was difficult to concentrate for Will on anything Era would tell him. Will was complaining again that he could not sleep. Their son told him; he will find a little marijuana to help him sleep better, more deeply. Will said ok, smoked some marijuana then he went unconscious.

He dropped to the floor. They called 911.

Will was rushed to the emergency room where did all kinds of test, nothing was wrong. The doctor told them this is the side effect of marijuana in some people. Maybe the marijuana was not clean. Will was not responsive for 24 hours; they were very scared. He was receiving fluids, his vitals were ok, but he was not responding he looked like he was asleep.

Will's breathing was very slow. Before the ambulance come Era did CPR on him, pushing his chest with her hands and giving breaths. She was shaking him, slapping him, trying everything to get a response, he did throw up. It was a very bad experience with marijuana, and everyone was blaming her son for it which was also hard. Will described the experience as feeling very weak and darkness. If he would have been alone, he would have died. Era wanted to try marijuana once, so she knows what her patients are talking about. She got some tea drink it and she had no effect. Then she chewed some of the leaves. Little later she saw fireworks, the beautiful colors of purple, blue, red, it was beautiful. She thought this is what actors and painters must see in Hollywood. She was laughing. Her husband was laughing because she was laughing. She said it was completely stupid. Then she was hungry remembering opening the fridge eating something and going to sleep. That is, it she said, never had it again. She is just not interested. Era said she is hyper as it is.

I asked Susan about marijuana. I was wondering if she has any conflict about her brother growing it. A little bit she said. She is trying to find the right words. She had some problems with it, but she also knows that cannabis can help people too. She was giving me an example of her boyfriend's mother who had brain cancer and was using marijuana as a vape. It helped her improve her quality of life. It was the only thing that stopped some of her seizures and nausea. Still she argues with him about it. She knows that there are good things about it, but she also feels it needs to be more regulated. There are a lot of chemicals used to grow marijuana and then people are inhaling it, not much better like cigarettes.

There needs to be more research about it.

In California there were more medical dispensaries and it was more under control than in Oregon. She had discussions with her brother. His view is who is anybody to tell anybody else how to live their lives. He felt that people should be able to do what they want. She talks about the controversy if people make something illegal people want to do it more. She was not sure if she believes in that.

We discussed benefits and damage for a while especially when youth are using marijuana. She definitely feels like more collaboration and research needs to be done. When comparing to heroin marijuana addiction does not seem as big of a deal.

Previous chapter

This book is dedicated to the memory of

Bagóczky József my uncle who died at age 19 — alcohol related car accident

and to everyone else who has been hurt or lost related to addiction

Many people had been supportive and inspiring to me so I could create this book. Both of my wonderful children told me, just write that book mom. My mom. I could have not done this without all the stories provided and the encouragement love and caring from my family and friends, nurses, doctors, counselors, teachers, professors, friends who are dealing with addiction and staying sober; and children, wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers of people who are dealing with addiction currently. Thank you for speaking up, sharing your stories and life experiences. Thank you for all the people who read this book while in progress to provide feedback, ideas and encouragement for me to continue writing. I would like to say special thanks to my friends and family for believing me and encouraging me to go on.
