Growth. We all want to experience it and feel the glow of changing for the better. We want to shed out of our ways like an old skin to reveal the beautiful butterfly that lies within. But, growth can be hard. With our busy lives that never seem to allow enough time for ourselves, working on ourself can feel like an impossible task. And how can we even know if we’re growing as a person anyway?

But, growth can be hard.

One of the first signs is that we feel more comfortable in our identity and who we are; confidence in yourself as a person. This sign may seem like an obvious sign of growth and quite frankly; it is. But it is an important one nonetheless. Feeling sure of your movements, not second-guessing yourself, and being more confident about your place in society are all signs that you’re coming to terms with who you are. This is a huge sign that you’re experiencing growth and bettering yourself as a person. If you are sure of who you are, then you are no longer a slave to societal constraints or expectations.

Feeling sure of your movements, not second-guessing yourself, and being more confident about your place in society are all signs that you’re coming to terms with who you are.

A second sign is that you are no longer afraid to be by yourself. You aren’t scared to be left alone with just you and your thoughts. I recently wrote this article all about why time by ourselves isn’t something to be scared of or to be associated with a negative connotation; but rather something to enjoy. It can be strange being by ourselves when we aren’t used to it. Our thoughts are loud and we can be confronted with things in our heads with no other person to distract us. We may be forced to acknowledge our flaws and inner mental conflicts; which can be hard. That is why spending time by yourself and enjoying it is a big sign of growth.

Another sign of personal growth is an increasing ability to empathize with people. When we aren’t able to emphasize with people, it doesn’t mean that we are horrible people; but it can indicate signs of deeper issues. An increasing ability to emphasize with people shows your growth in regards to others; you reaching out into the world and able to see outside the bubble of your own life.

When we aren’t able to emphasize with people, it doesn’t mean that we are horrible people; but it can indicate signs of deeper issues.

Here are some things you can include in your daily life to grow as a person:

1. Reflect on toxic behaviors you engage in

2. Think about harmful behaviors you engage in, why you engage in those behaviors, and what root issue it might be stemming on

3. See your mistakes not as failures, but as learning lessons

4. Promise to understand yourself better

5. Make lists of things you are grateful for every day

6. Remove toxic relationships from your life

7. Recognize that while life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows, clouds don’t stay forever.

Here is a list of things that might be happening to you if you are experiencing growth:

1. You are finding out unexpected things about yourself

2. You might feel uncomfortable; growth isn’t easy

3. You see your past as a collection of life lessons, not failures and mistakes

4. You are better able to identify your feelings

5. You acknowledge and reflect on your feelings instead of pushing them down.

Growth is achievable by everyone and varies from person to person. There isn’t an exact recipe to follow to experience growth, but there are many things you can do to help get you there. Look out for my upcoming article on ways to grow!
