Embracing Imperfection: My Journey to Authentic Living
How Letting Go of Perfection Helped Me Find Freedom and Connection
Perfection is something I chased for many years, especially in my roles as a coach, wife, and mother. I thought if I could just get everything right—if I could be the perfect coach, the perfect mother, the perfect businesswoman—then I would finally be happy and fulfilled. But that pursuit of perfection never brought me peace. Instead, it left me feeling exhausted, disconnected, and far from my true self.
As women, we’ve been conditioned to believe that perfection is the ultimate goal. Society teaches us that if we can just look perfect, act perfect, and achieve perfect results, we will finally be accepted. However, through my own journey, I’ve learned that the opposite is true. It was only when I embraced my imperfections that I began to live authentically and feel more connected to both myself and those around me.
The Illusion of Perfection
Growing up, I believed that perfection was something to aspire to. Whether it was excelling academically, maintaining the perfect appearance, or having the flawless career, I thought perfection was the key to success and happiness. Social media only amplified these pressures. I would scroll through my feed and see perfectly curated lives—women who seemed to have it all together—and it made me feel inadequate.
But the truth is, perfection is an illusion. No matter how hard we try, something will always be beyond our control. I realized this the hard way, especially during the early stages of building The Universe Guru. I pushed myself to meet unrealistic expectations—working tirelessly to build my brand while being a perfect wife and mother. I wore myself thin, chasing an unattainable version of success. It wasn’t until I allowed myself to be imperfect that I finally felt connected to my work and my community.
Freedom in Imperfection
One of the most liberating moments in my journey was accepting that it’s okay not to have it all together. The pressure to be perfect was weighing me down, and it was holding me back from being my authentic self. When I started embracing my flaws, vulnerabilities, and imperfections, I found a sense of freedom I had never experienced before.
In my personal life, this meant accepting that I didn’t need to be the “perfect” mother or wife. Instead of holding myself to impossible standards, I chose to be present with my family. My children didn’t need perfection from me—they needed my love, attention, and authenticity. Professionally, I realized that showing up as my authentic self, rather than trying to be the perfect coach, allowed me to connect more deeply with my clients. People are drawn to authenticity, not perfection. When we allow ourselves to be seen as we truly are, we create space for real connection.
Letting Go of Control
Part of embracing imperfection also means letting go of control. For a long time, I believed that I needed to control every aspect of my life to ensure things went smoothly. But life doesn’t work that way. No matter how hard we try to control everything, unexpected challenges arise.
Through practicing mindfulness and meditation, I learned to let go. Life isn’t about having everything perfectly planned out—it’s about being adaptable and flowing with whatever comes our way. Letting go of control doesn’t mean being careless. It means trusting that things will work out, even if they don’t go according to plan. This mindset shift has been a game-changer for me, both personally and professionally.
The Power of Vulnerability
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned on this journey is the power of vulnerability. For years, I believed that showing vulnerability would make me seem weak. As a life coach and mentor, I thought I had to present myself as someone who had everything figured out. But the more I embraced vulnerability, the more I realized that it’s one of our greatest strengths.
Allowing myself to be vulnerable opened the door to real connection with others. When I started sharing my struggles and challenges with my audience, people resonated with my story on a much deeper level. They appreciated my honesty and saw that they weren’t alone in their own imperfections. Vulnerability fosters trust, empathy, and understanding, and it has helped me build stronger relationships both personally and professionally.
Practical Ways to Embrace Imperfection
Embracing imperfection is a practice. It requires patience, self-compassion, and intention. Here are a few ways you can start embracing your imperfections:
Practice Self-Compassion: When you make a mistake or fall short, instead of beating yourself up, practice self-compassion. Remind yourself that it’s okay to be imperfect. Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, just as you would a friend.
Shift Your Focus: Instead of dwelling on your flaws, focus on your strengths and what you’re grateful for. Celebrate your progress, even if it feels small. Recognize that being a work in progress is valuable.
Embrace Vulnerability: Start opening up about your struggles. Whether it's with a friend, family member, or through journaling, sharing your imperfections makes it easier to accept them.
Let Go of Perfectionism: Identify areas in your life where you’re holding yourself to impossible standards. Challenge those beliefs and ask yourself if striving for perfection is truly serving you. Focus on doing your best, not on doing things perfectly.
Finding Authenticity Through Imperfection
At the end of the day, embracing imperfection is about embracing who we truly are—flaws and all. It’s about accepting that we are human, that we will make mistakes, and that we are worthy of love and success, even in our imperfection. When we stop chasing an unattainable standard of perfection, we open ourselves up to deeper peace, growth, and connection with others.
By embracing imperfection, we allow ourselves the freedom to evolve into the best version of ourselves—not the perfect version, but the most authentic version. And that, I believe, is the true path to living a fulfilling, joyful life.
