Do you know why it is SO important to take care of your mental health? Because it is like an investment. Mental illnesses can lead to other types of illnesses, such as heart disease, so by taking care of your mind you are taking care of your whole body. However, if your heart is not that important to you, you may start taking care of yourself when you know that mental problems can be the cause of erectile dysfunction. That's right, even our little friend down there can suffer the consequences of not caring about our sanity.

We tend to believe that impotence treatments are only for men over 40, so it is not a concern for us young men full of vitality. You are wrong if you think so since psychological erectile dysfunction has been detected in 1 in 4 patients with this problem.

Do you want to know the most worrying part? Many of these patients are not older than 35 years. I already got your attention, right? Well, read on and you will discover more about how to prevent ED.

The penis also has emotions

You may be thinking:

“My PP is erect due to the blood flow, what do depression and anxiety have to do with all this?”

First, PP is not the proper term. We are all mature adults here, let's call things by their proper names.

For the erection of the wiener to be achieved, there are several elements at play. Yes, this is achieved by blood flow, but to get there there are triggers, some are reflexes, such as the erection that happens while we sleep, but in others, hormones, neural signals, and the regulation of emotions are necessary.

Erectile dysfunction happens when one of the elements fails. In most cases of men over 40, the causes of ED are heart problems. But as we saw, emotion regulation plays an important role. Do you know which diseases seriously affect how we regulate emotions? Exactly, anxiety, depression, and hundreds of other mental illnesses.

So it's not just a matter of the heart pumping blood, mental and emotional stability is necessary, which is why many impotence treatments involve psychological therapy.

Psychological ED: what are the causes

You do not have to be a chronic depression patient to suffer from erectile dysfunction, since it can occur for various reasons. Some may be circumstantial, others may have origins from our childhood.

In general, the causes of ED can be:

Stress: we can all have sources of stress in our lives. From debts to pay, a demanding job, relationship problems until your soccer team did not advance to the playoffs. When stress levels are very high, or their presence has been prolonged, it can lead to the inability to have or maintain an erection.

Anxiety: you may feel anxiety during sexual intercourse, because of the concern about your performance and the satisfaction of your partner. On the other hand, you can experience anxiety in your day-to-day, which has an obvious effect on your heart rate. In either case, this is one of the main causes of erectile dysfunction.

Depression and low self-esteem: both erection and sexual desire depend on chemical processes in the brain. Depression is an imbalance of these processes, causing low sexual desire, self-esteem problems, and impotence.

Personal and relationship problems: If you and your partner are going through difficult times, this is likely to affect your sexual appetite. On the other hand, having been part of an abusive relationship in the past can also cause erectile dysfunction, as there are unidentified traumas that fuel the problem.

Treatment for psychological ED

If the causes of your erectile dysfunction are linked to mental health, it is most likely that you have more than one problem on your hands. Perhaps you may be dealing with stress, anxiety, or another disorder. The first thing is to rule out physical causes and then focus on the mental.

Before doing anything, you must make sure that your problems are not due to a physical illness. Most ED patients suffer from heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or illnesses caused by the abuse of substances such as tobacco and alcohol. With some tests, you can rule out any of these possibilities and start looking for impotence treatments.

If your case is psychological ED, you should bear in mind that a mental health professional or therapist is not going to treat your impotence. He or she will apply various cognitive or behavioral psychological techniques, whichever are appropriate, to find the origin of your illness. The source of stress or anxiety or the event that triggered your depression. Then, the methods or medications will be to treat your mental health problems. The improvement of your erectile dysfunction problems will come with time.

Simply put, no therapist is going to ask you “How is your penis feeling today?” And if this happens, it is illegal and you should run out of there.

Your problem is not erectile dysfunction, it is your mental health. Your main goal should be to keep emotionally stable, by achieving that, you will see improvement in your overall health.
