Being a waitress or waiter is a tiring job, from mean people to low pay. Especially in an inflation-ridden economy waiting is becoming a rough job. There are a lot of issues facing wait staff right now.

Money Concerns

Wait staff usually get paid under minimum wage because "tips" should cover minimum wage. First off that should be illegal but it's not. (My opinion, but still.) For example, Colorado's Minimum wage is $12.56 per hour. Being a waitress your hourly pay will only be $9.34, which means every person will have to tip $3.02. A normal tip? $2.50. With inflation being crazy right now 9 dollars is not a liveable wage. Let's do some math to show as an example. The average rent in Denver Colorado is about $1,900. Now let's say you work 40 hours a week. Without factoring in tips you make about $370 a week. Now let's say the first day you work it's a busy day and you make $70 for tips. Add that it's $440. Now the next two days are extremely slow making $30 the first day and $25 the second. We've made $495. The next day is not too bad you get $50. The day after that $45 and the final day you make $35. Congratulations you've only made $625. Usually, rent is paid monthly so let's say $625 is consistent throughout the month. Ended up with $2,500. Got to pay rent so you're left with $600. Now how is $600 going to pay for gas, groceries, electricity, sewer, and trash (ECT.) It's not. You either have to have roommates, a second job, or a good side hustle. It's hard to get ahead. My information was found here and here. All math was done by me so if I made a mistake please correct me.

The Rough Customers

Customer service jobs are hard, to begin with, mix it with restaurants where things go wrong and get mixed up, a recipe for disaster. Wait staff isn't paid enough to deal with rude people. Sometimes people ask for special stuff and different things on orders which can be forgotten or missed. Most people are calm and tell their server, but others yell at their server. Being on the receiving end of a hangry (Hangry is a person who is angry because they are hungry) person who is directly being mean to you for a mistake sucks and is extremely hard to not yell back or physically hurt the person that's in your face. People like these drain social batteries. Which makes this job exhausting.

Job Duties

If you have never been a waitress you might not understand how taxing the job is. What exactly are their job duties? Well, it depends on the resturant, but here are some examples. Wrap silverware, prepare tables, fill condiments, fill the cold plate, make salads, prepare soups, take orders, put out plates, get drinks, serve multiple tables at once, clean tables, and check customers out. Now duties differ depending on the establishment. Multiple jobs have to be done. It can be very stressful and taxing making this job hard on your mental and physical health.

Waiting is an extremely exhausting job. From low pay to the mean people, to the crazy amount of duties you have it's stressful. A lot of this is from personal experience. I worked as a waitress for almost 3 years and it was one of the hardest jobs I have had. I never seemed to have enough money or motivation to do much. Now that I'm working at a different place my motivation is back and I have a lot more money. My experience as a waitress made me appreciate the people who are in the job and the job I have now. Anyways be nice to your servers they are most likely exhausted.
