A tribute.

in the late 1990s, iconic drag queen RuPaul had a talk show on VH1, and the show was really good. Roo was always joined on stage with her best friend and assistant Michelle visage. In my personal point of view, the RuPaul talk show was really a good and entertaining late night talk show to watch. Well, the show was on the air. Some notable guests that came to mind are Dennis Rodman, who RuPaul kissed on one episode. Other notable guests were the B-52, the late Olivia, Newton-John, and MDO – another incarnation of Menudo, these are the few that came to my mind initially. I have never forgotten the memorable moment on the show, when Dennis Rodman and RuPaul shared a kiss on the lips. RuPaul’s opinion of the kiss and Dennis’ lips were that it was “nice and juicy.”

With the shows, musical guests, and funny skits, the better words describe the skits would be campy. With a show like VH1 RuPaul‘s talkshow, it was perfect for the time that it was on the air. Each time when the show was over, we would do a call and response to the audience of say love love and always a reminder “if you can’t love yourself how in the hell you gonna love somebody else ?” which is so true.

Even though RuPaul is now doing the drag race, superstar show, the talkshow should be brought back. The show would open was RuPaul coming out and doing a song and then I’m monologue. As a talkshow host, RuPaul was engaging. She always knew how to conduct a wonderful interview. RuPaul‘s talkshow was one of a kind.

After Divine, RuPaul is America’s favorite, drag queen. Those RuPaul‘s talk she did have a good run, it did last for a couple of years with good ratings. Me, writing a review about the show, makes it obvious that this show was in fact memorable. I came across the RuPaul talkshow, just changing channels, trying to find something to watch late at night. I love the bright way that the set was decorated like a stage at a drag night club. Until I saw RuPaul, no other drag, king or queen had ever had their own talkshow before. RuPaul made it possible for kings and queens to have their own talk shows, and do their own things in pop culture. Another reason the show worked so well was because at the time VH1 was very experimental, and what they were airing. The good news is that YouTube exists now. So, even though you have to look for the RuPaul show it lives on on that platform.

The RuPaul talk show on VH1 was a campy and delicious celebrity talkshow/half hour variety show. Rechecking the details, the show only lasted one season from 1997– 1998. It has been years since the RuPaul talk show had been on the air, in that time, RuPaul has become a reputable television personality, but I still think fondly of the RuPaul talk show just like I think fondly of Ru’s current television ventures .

To watch the RuPaul talk show, it was now, it was cool, it was hip and happening. I never missed an episode. I loved the gay sensibilities of the show not only because RuPaul is gay too. This is a subject of another article, but maybe the shows I watched enjoy at the time like this were the first clues from my subconscious that I myself am also LGBTQ, but at that time who knows. But what I know is that for those who actually saw the show what we saw in the RuPaul talk show was truly something special.
