Your Perfume

A love Poem

The cushion smells of your perfume:

Sweet, kind,

Beautiful and sublime.

memories spring to life,

In this empty room.

❤️

The cushion smells of your perfume:

Holds me aloft,

While you’re away and off,

My head in this soft, and comforting cocoon.

❤️

The cushion smells of your perfume:

Delicate, quaint,

The scent of a saint,

Oh, how it paints, the walls of this tomb.

❤️

The cushion smells of your perfume:

Hurry back soon,

For I in this room,

This barren womb,

Is but an old guitar, long out of tune.

❤️

So I’m sitting in the house, and the mrs is with the monster-in-law. Aside from the erratic sound-design of Bill Nighy’s ‘Living’ playing in the background, and the rattling of the ceiling fan, the room is eerily quiet.

I sigh and I lay down my head, resigned to focusing on the movie, when her scent wofts from the cushion and enters my nose, lighting up my mind with all the beautiful moments of our shared time.

Drifting atop this wave of memory, there is no pain or sorrow, no malice or negativity. Just a place in space and time where nothing exists but us, safe in our own intimacy.

And that was when these words flowed from the edges of my fingertips onto the screen, and found their way into your screens, along your optical nerves, and translated these random symbols into what I hope is a sense of longing, a feeling, a representation of the true joys and hang-ups of love itself.

How such a feeling can transcend you outside of the natural world, and suspend you in a sub-reality of stars and moons and vibrant, colourful energy, swirling in infinite beauty around two souls entwined.

Perhaps love is the answer. Perhaps love is what we mean when we utter the concept of God. Surely it is the answer to every known question us, in our painful mortality, can ask. And perhaps, further still, it is the undying force that exists long after our eventual departure; eternal, ever-living, as the old stories of heaven and God and angels promise.
