Be proud to be a woman
but never show it.
Your vagina surely told you
when you became a woman.
Although proud of newfound womanhood,
never speak of your menstruation
aloud in public,
especially around the men,
because that would be unladylike.
Aunt Flo’s visits are a secret
that you must grapple with in silence.
Your menstruation is no excuse
to be ill
to miss work
to sleep in
to feel sad
or to act hormonal
because that would be unladylike.
Your chest told everyone else
the day you became a woman.
When breasts emerged
and nipples poked through innocent t-shirt s
is when you first learned to hide yourself
and your womanhood in painful bras.
Only wear the plain bras ,
none of that push-up shit ,
especially nothing with lace or bright colors.
You wouldn’t want to look like a whore!
Don’t let your bra show through your shirt,
cover your bra straps,
hide your distracting shoulders,
and don’t you dare consider going braless
because that would be unladylike.
Embrace your beauty
by making yourself look
presentable for others.
Wear makeup to hide the flaws ,
but not too much that you look slutty
because that would be unladylike.
Make sure your shorts aren’t too short,
that you don’t expose your hidden figure,
that your cleavage doesn’t shine,
or else you’re looking for attention
and that would be unladylike.
Don’t walk alone at night
wearing anything remotely attractive,
especially your oversized t-shirt
and sweatpants with
unwashed hair thrown in a messy bun
because you'd be asking for it
and that would be unladylike.
Don't flaunt your body.
Don’t sit with your legs spread.
Don’t eat with your hands.
Don’t dare dream of living
an independent,
child-free,
career-focused life
or else you will be constantly reminded
that you are off track
and that would be unladylike.
Well, I say screw it.
Screw it all!
Wear what you want ,
don’t wear what you don’t want ,
do whatever the hell you want,
don’t do what you don’t want.
Being a woman is a beautiful thing
that does not exist to simply please others
or conform to outdated ideals.
Womanhood is what you make it
which no one at all
has the right
to tell you how to do.
