A poem

the latches aren’t broken

we breathe easy

all the same

/

there’s dust

and toxic waste

at the helm

of all our days

/

exchanged

for an inhale

an exhale

of praise

/

but we don’t

open the windows

so of course

there’s no change

/

and we’ve grown

claustrophobic

so soon we desire space

/

but we don’t

open the windows

so of course

that’s the case

/

the latches aren’t broken

we breathe easy

all the same

/

but we don’t

open the windows

so together

we remain

When writing this poem, I thought a lot about codependency and how it can be toxic in so many different ways. In the moment, it’s tough to see just how damaging relationships like that can be. It often takes the removal of oneself before realizing how unhealthy codependency is. And it can take a while before a fresh perspective comes to help with the realization.
