Why You Could Never Survive 24 Hours in World War I

In fields of death, where bullets zoom

And bombs fall down from cloudy gloom

A war so bad, like none before

Where none could live a day or more

In trenches deep, where rats do thrive

And soldiers fight hard to survive

The smell of death, the mud, the gore

No place for those who peace adore

Machine guns blast, snipers take aim

And poison gas brings burning pain

New weapons, mean and cruel tricks

In this dark game, no fair conflicts

If by luck you dodge the lead

Sickness and germs wait instead

Trench foot, fever, diarrhea

In dirty, cramped spaces, no area

And if to sea or sky you go

The risks out there, you'll quickly know

In small submarines, or planes up high

No break from fighting, no place to lie

The Eastern Front, just as tough

Where hunger, cold, and typhus rough

Hurt both sides, friend and foe

In cities crushed, where none dare go

So if to World War One you're sent

Your life would be quick and spent

In hellish fields, where death holds power

No one could last even an hour

The "war to end all wars" they said

But left instead, a world of dread.
