Why so heartless?

a poem about toxic masculinity

Young man, where is your humanity?

Those feelings you bottle up inside?

where is your humanness? do you not know you are made in God's image?

A testament to his glory, his beauty, and his power?

How did you become so cold, so heartless, so cruel?

Who taught you that being a man meant denying that which makes you human?

You are human, not infallible but flawed

Not cold as a dead thing but warm and alive

You are mortal, subject to death and hell

Able to rise to the pinnacles of heaven

You, man, are the twinkle in God's eye just the way you are

So why do you run away from your feelings and deny the limitations that make you God's prized creation?

Why man, do you pretend that you have no heart? that you feel nothing for the one you love?

Why do you believe yourself to be hard and stoic?

Incapable of feeling, unable to hurt, a man of steel but at the mercy of emotions gone wild.

Fears unchained suppressed into deep madness

Restrained feelings of guilt and sadness waiting for their chance to be unleashed,

To destroy your well-crafted mask that hides who you are in blind vengeance as if to say "How dare you ignore us!"

Why young man do you weep in silence and hide your feelings behind bravado and masculine lies?

You seem so bold but why do I still smell fear on you?

Because you run from your flaws, shrivel yourself into irrelevance when faced with a challenge and shrink in the face of growth.

You use anger as your weapon to fool the ignorant and discourage the compassionate

You lie well with your furious outbursts,

Faux courage to intimidate the weak

Knowing well that you are weak yourself yet you choose rage as your tool to wield power not knowing it is a portent of your destruction

Is not courage the test of a man?

So why do you hide from the truth and run from your emotions which when conquered validate manhood?

Live in the truth, I will tell you no lies

Our ancestors were tested on the battlefields

Boys became Men when forced to conquer their fears

Learning to still themselves into quiet resolve but you young man, you stink of cowardice and choose to deceive yourself with the lies your ego tell you

Ego deceives you into ridicule and mockery and what is left is the brokenness of what you could have been.

I said, what I said....
