Who Was He?

It's a boy, the doctor said

The arrival of an heir

Celebrations, happy tears,

He took his first step,

He loved the pink dress,

Mom, can I play with this doll?

His father beat him with a rod.

Agonized, full of despair, Who was he?

Was he a she?

A freak!

The boys laughed as he blushed,

So delicate, they kicked his butt,

Man up, you disgrace!

His father kicked him out,

His mother cried out loud,

Traumatized and weak,

Alone he wandered on the streets, Who was he?

Was he a she?

Ashamed and devalued,

Misfit in the world of "normal people."

Your poem captures the heartache of a person struggling against society's expectations.

  • Sadly, this happens a lot around the world. Such a tragic poem!
