What the Robin Knows

Winged Messenger

By Mother CombsPublished 5 months ago Updated 5 months ago 1 min read
Created in Gemini

You took an early morning walk

Upon the misty shores of Norfolk

Pausing to skip flattened stones

Making your daily request

To the spirit of the water

Standing in the crisp, cool breeze

Alone at the start of the day

Wrapped in your blue cardigan

You stand with your skirt

Whipping in the wind

Lonely, you stand and mourn

Two hearts torn asunder

With a cry to Belisama

You beg to be rejoined

Even through the veil of death

Offering anything in exchange

To be honored with a boon

From the Lady in the Lake

To just tell your true love

Just how your heart feels

You thought you were by yourself

Completely unaware

Of your feathered guardian

How can I know all of this?

The redbreast told me so

Image created in Gemini

Early in the spring

When the buds begin to form

He flies in on a gale

Carrying news from above

Chirping out his song

He bobs and darts across the yard

The early bird catches the worm

Curious, he watches the lake ritual

Hopping along, he flutters closer

Boldly looking with his eyes

With confident trills

He becomes a confidant

To the oath being spoken

To be enlisted by the Pagan

To carry forth the message

You cried out

Standing by the edge of the water

He understood his cue

Taking flight

He came to me

Drunk on winter berries

He landed on my hand

And sang his little tune

Then he cocked his little head

Asking me what he should do

Hoping to lift your spirits

And to give you a new will to live

I gave him this message

To return to you

“I’ll always be by your side

I’m just waiting on the other bank

Waiting for your time to cross the veil

It’s not your time yet

You’ve got to continue to grow

So go out into the world

And remember to shine.”
