What Our Hearts Have Learned

In youth, I threw my heart into the fire,

A fool for one who stayed, to watch it burn

And stirred the coals to sate her own desire,

To leave me naught but ashes in return.

Though what remained was sifted and restored

By one who yearned to fill an empty space,

There came a day when our hearts moved toward

New lives, new loves, each in a brand new place.

In time, the road mine followed, led to yours,

And both are whole and nurtured, here today,

Safe and sound, on love's protective shores,

Guiding us, as one, along life's way.

*

The path to here and now twisted and turned,

But we are more, for what our hearts have learned.
