Waste

Poem about the struggles of mental health and addiction.

Tell me, baby, do you know what it’s like when anxiety chokes you? When you’re suffocating and nobody can get through to you? Do you ever wish you could wake up and be somebody new? Your heart is racing. Your hands are shaking. Don’t forget to breathe.

Tell me, baby, what do you do when the sadness takes over? Now you’ve finally stopped wishing on every damn four leaf clover. Could you be a little more bipolar? God, such a waste. More attempts on your life than your age. Should have left your heart in that cage. How’s it feel when they call you a fighter and don’t realize some days it’s all you can do just to fight to get out of bed? Left to figure out if you’d be better off dead. You were so scared of yourself you even tried therapy.

Tell me, baby, why are you battling with your faith? Can’t you see it’s written all over your face? You can never follow life’s pace. Empty bottles surround you. Emotion evades you. When your blood turns to wine and your begging for them to take your body instead. There’s been so many words left unsaid.

Tell me, baby, are you ready to fight so you don’t wind up dead?

Whenever you have a chance, please read a haiku chain poem I wrote about anxiety and what it feels like for me. https://vocal.media/poets/emergency-i-m-having-a-panic-attack

Great poem. As a person who lives with both Autism and mental health issues, this is relatable to me. Anxiety is a complex thing to live with. It’s not just normal worry that people experience here and there. It’s a disease that can weaken your abilities to function if not managed properly. Thanks for writing this.
