Unreasonable Expectations

An open letter to those who treat me like shit, you know who you are

By Cella PoynterPublished 4 years ago 1 min read

You expect me to speak, but don't care to listen. You expect me to speak, but always interrupt. You expect me to speak, but value my silence over my words.

I do not wish to speak, because I know I write far more eloquently. I do not wish to speak, because my art speaks with a voice universally understood. I do not wish to speak, because words stick to my tongue and refuse to leave my mouth. I do not wish to speak, because every time you speak longer, or louder, or with less emotion, you believe that you have won the argument.

Why should I bother trying, when your roar will always drown me out? Why should I attempt to explain, when you don't have a single shit to give?

You tell me to speak up, then ramble on so my voice has no room to be heard. You say I'm too shy, that people like me better when I speak my mind; but anything important enough for me to say, you do not care to hear.

You say I do not talk enough, but the reality is that you don't let me speak, always making your voice louder. So fuck your expectations, I'm through with being told that written words are not enough, that my actions do not speak. Take your annoying ass off to pester someone else; I've plenty of things to do, and I speak just fine for myself.
