Uncommon Bond

A Love So Rare Even 20 Years Apart Couldn't Kill It

Love's not so young dream. ;)

One unlikely romance between opposites,

A Handsome loner, brooding and troubled,

And me, awkward, bookish, and full of dreams,

We came together.

Crazy kids so many years ago

An Unending love without reservation,

A soft place to fall,

For two outsiders looking in.

And finding only each other.

Two hearts, imperfect and scared,

Beat together as one,

A symphony of perfect unison.

If only for a time.

Too young to know the meaning of love

That's what the adults said.

We hung on as long as we could

And then we said goodbye.

You broke my heart into a million pieces,

I did the same to you,

Over and over, through the years

We tried, we loved, and we failed.

Life went on, it always does,

20 years, marriages, divorces, kids and jobs,

I buried you where you buried me,

In a box marked Do Not Open.

The pain too much to bear,

Of that one true love,

Lost to time and youthful folly,

The one who got away.

Then, suddenly, you're back again,

Bigger, balder, and older,

And I'm bigger and older too,

Transported to a familiar time and place.

Our faces, a testament to the passing decades,

But the flame burns just as bright,

Brooding boy, awkward girl,

Daring to give it one more try.

And we found what always was,

A love so rare,

A connection so strong,

Even time couldn't break the bond.

I feel you the way you feel me,

Deep inside my soul,

Sitting by your side or a thousand miles away,

We know.

Free from judgment, free to be,

Free of expectation,

Nothing but the warm security,

Of home in each other's arms.

Still a love without reservation,

A soft place to fall,

Two hearts, imperfect and scared,

And still beating together as one.

Goofing around in Carl's studio in matching t-shirts

😭😭😭 This is so heavenly. You have told a beautiful family story and have a wonderful sense of humor. I love how you reinforced the honesty in this with candid pictures. πŸ’•πŸ’–πŸ’•

The honesty of this poem is almost brutal, and that makes it so, so valuable. I’m so happy that you and your husband love each other, even though love is never perfect. I think that’s something that most people shy away from. Thank you for sharing your story in such a beautiful way.
