Trials

Ashes of innocents

Another stone upon my chest

I cannot draw another breath

My lungs collapse, I welcome death

As my mortal body is laid to rest

I wish I had a spell to cast

If only I could conjure hexes

The first stone would have been the last

But I am not what you suspected

So you seal me in a coffin of stones

Crushing every one of my bones

And there is nothing I can do

Because the things you say aren’t true

You pray for me as you seal my tomb

My fate in your hands, you uncurl your fingers

Sentencing me to my doom

You are colder a thousand winters

Another accusation made

And just one lie is all it takes

To put an innocent in chains

Or burn her at the stake

You say you want me to repent

You only want me to confess

To a crime I didn’t commit

With a power I don’t possess

Damned if I do and damned if I don’t

Admit to atrocities I’d never condone

For even if I lie to appease you

Nothing that I say will please you

I am not what you are after

But still I’m hanging from the rafters

I am not the things you say

Still I am burning at the stake

If only I could bewitch you

I would curse you for your cruel actions

You blame me for your own desires

As I burn, ashes to ashes
