They tell us that anything is possible
They tell us how we may rise from our circumstances
That with hard work, we can have lives like theirs
Unaware that the "circumstance" to which they want to save us from
are the result of their actions
or more rightly so, their inaction
They tell us that the past is the past
As they harvest the dividends of our ancestor's pain
of our pain
They tell us to forget the actions of people who look like them
but have long passed
For the injustice we "claim" to experience today
are the results of the dead
the ones who cannot be held to account
They claim they are powerless against their privilege
Expecting us to be empowered in our marginalisation
