The Winter Of Our Lives

We met during the winter of our lives
When days are short and nights are long
When trees lay bare and life lies hidden
We met during the winter of our lives
When the sun barely warms the ocean wave
When the snow hung heavy on the bough
We met during the winter of our lives
When fists and words tortured us so
When fear held more meaning than the sun
We met during the winter of our lives
When smiles were the only warmth we knew
When we hungered but for a kindly touch

We parted during the winter of our lives
To the drip of icicles upon the eaves
With the whisper of hope for spring thaw
We parted during the winter of our lives
With the touch of warm skin still fresh in memory
With the poetic words that echo so long after
We parted during the winter of our lives
When the moon still reigned the nightly sky
When the world was colorless and gray
We parted during the winter of our lives
To promises that we could never keep
Wishing for a spring that never came.

Yes, we met during the winter of our lives
But the sun never rose to warm our souls
Yes, we parted during the winter of our lives.
And the words have echoed ever more.
